Kumara toast an experiment that was surprisingly tasty

Sarah and Martin.

Sarah and Martin.

Last week, Martin and I did something we've never done with kumara before. We sliced it, toasted it, smothered it with peanut butter and ate it.

And it was surprisingly okay! This weird new food trend was discovered by a blogger who ran out of bread one day and thought "why not use kumara instead?" Of course when she made her kumara toast, the slices were thin and even.

We work in an office that provides substandard kitchen equipment so after hacking away at our kumara with a seriously blunt knife for several minutes, we decided to pull out the big guns.

Whilst I wouldn't recommend slicing vegetables with a guillotine at home, Martin managed to produce two semi bread-like slices without losing any fingers. After initially declaring that kumara toast tasted like dirt, he found it got better the more you ate.

You can check out the video of us making and eating our kumara toast at thehits.co.nz/martinandsarah ... in case you ever run out of bread and happen to have a kumara handy.

Perhaps it was this fuel that led to my first goal of the season for Indigo Port Hill United on Sunday.

I would say my first football goal ever but there was that time when I was in primary school and apparently scored a goal, or so I was told after. I don't really remember because I blacked out from excitement when it looked like it was going in.

I managed to stay upright and fully conscious this time and while I was stoked to put my first goal in to the net, it was a somewhat hollow victory. Not because it was an own goal (like Martin has suggested) but because I kind of stole the goal off someone else. One of our amazing strikers, 16-year-old Guinni actually took the shot at goal. It was past the goal keeper and about 10cm off from the goal when I decided that it needed a bit of help to get past the line and gave it the final boot in. Is it relevant that the ball was going in anyway? Well yes but to be fair, Guinni is a bit of a soccer superstar and has already scored heaps of goals this season.

Considering there is a financial incentive offered to her for every goal she scores and I effectively stole $5 from a teenager, she was very nice about it.

I think I might need to buy her a lemonade this weekend!
