We're going back in time this week and having a blast doing it!
Hot on the heels of the news that The Vengaboys are coming back to New Zealand after 15 years, we've got The Venga Bus carrying the best bangers of the 90s all this week on The Hits89.5FM.
It's scary to think that 1996 was 20 years ago, but boy, it's fun to reminisce. My experience of the 90s couldn't be more different from Martin's - after all, there is 12-year age gap between us.
It was a decade of firsts for Martin. He got married, bought his first house, welcomed his first child and, possibly the biggest change of all, upgraded his Walkman to a Discman ... and was plunged into the frustrating world of CD scratches and skipping songs (they never really sorted out that "anti-shock" technology, did they?)
I spent most of the 90s in primary school and we entertained ourselves with awesome inventions such as the chatter ring, "pro-yos" (like a yo-yo but obviously way cooler) and we were all saving up for one thing: a Tamagotchi.
In case you need reminding, the Tamagotchi was a handheld digital pet. For those of us without animals at home, we tried to use the Tamagotchi as proof we were responsible enough to take care of a real pet. Most parents weren't convinced and rightly so; there's a big difference between cleaning up poop on a screen and cleaning it up in real life.
The 90s saw the release of some great movies too: Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Toy Story, Home Alone, Pretty Woman ... the list goes on and on.
Topping the list as the highest-grossing movie of the decade was, of course, Titanic - a movie that I've personally seen more than 100 times and could once recite all the words of (aside from playing with my pro-yo, I clearly didn't achieve much during my formative years).
The music of the 90s was something else. Grunge took its place on the world stage as bands such as Nirvana spoke to the hearts of angst-filled teenagers, before we moved on to more happy rock and then bubblegum pop.
Oh, such glorious days.
So come with us this week as we journey through the decade where you couldn't be on the phone and internet at the same time and were constantly reminded to "be kind and rewind".
