A beautiful hat can really make an outfit.

A beautiful hat can really make an outfit.

I have a wedding to go to this spring ... hats are always worn in England, what about here?

I'd love to say they are, but alas not often enough. New Zealand women seem to have an aversion to hats, except when it comes to the races and then they go all out.

The time of the wedding will have an impact on whether hats are worn or not - it's more likely at a daytime wedding as opposed to late afternoon/early evening.

I went to a wedding in January in Blenheim where it was mighty hot and a lot of women wore hats, but more for sunhat value as opposed to a fashion accessory.

But it's not about what other people do; it's about what you want to do. If you would like to wear a hat, I say go for it. I think it's wonderful to have occasions such as weddings where we can dress up and feel fabulous. Just be careful not to upstage the bride, mother-of-the-bride or mother-in-law-to-be with your fabulousness.

Choosing a hat:

*Ensure the style suits your face shape.

*Colour wise - ensure the colour works with your natural colouring, that it enhances you, and that it complements your outfit.

*Balance and proportion - ensure the hat is in overall proportion and looks balanced with your size.

*Style versatility - that you can wear the hat with other outfits, not just as a one-off.

*Fascinators are an alternative to a hat - a small decorative headpiece.

*Seek expert advice.
