Serena Constable and Kellie Cushings

Serena Constable and Kellie Cushings

I'D GO back to Isla just for the towels.

That doesn't make sense to you? Let me start at the beginning.

As I walked into Isla, the new skin therapy clinic on Tennyson Street in Napier, the street noise melted away and I found myself in a beautifully clean, bright and serene space.

Owner Kellie Cushing and her senior therapist Serena Constable are charming and totally immersed in their profession.

"Our focus is your skin. We want to make it the best it possibly can be," Kellie said. The DMK philosophy is remove, rebuild, protect and maintain [your skin].

Kellie, who has two boys, named the clinic after "the baby girl I never had", she laughs.
"Isla is a place to escape to. Both Serena and I are passionate about delivering the absolute best experience and of course results — that's what it's all about results."

While they offer waxing, eye treatments and medi pedicures, their main focus is skin.

They have a signature facial which "encompasses everything your skin needs to be renewed and radiant", plus the Isla Express which is a two-stage cleanse and exfoliation followed by a specialised treatment mask which takes just 30 minutes. Perfect for a quick pick me up.

Their DMK Enzyme Therapy works with "your own skin's chemistry to address concerns such as wrinkles, pigmentation sun damage acne and more."

They also offer microdermabrasion — a non-invasive treatment ideal for refining the skin's surface. This is done with a micro machine fitted with a diamond coated tip which gently removes the top layer of dead and damaged skin.

Kellie and Serena have known each other a few years have a natural chemistry together.
"Serena is the most amazing therapist I have worked with. She treats this salon as if it where her responsibility — as if it were her own. Her care to attention is incredible — she always goes above and beyond for clients whether she's doing eyebrows, waxing or a full skin therapy."

The clinic uses DMK which are botanical-based paramedical products designed to treat every skin condition possible.

"The producers philosophy works in with our own lymphatic system, using your own skin function to rebuild, revive your skin's cell integrity. Typically skin care is for short term results. That's not what we are after we want long term results, it might take a bit longer to achieve but it is worth the wait."

Now it was my turn to experience Isla treatment.

Kellie took me into a lovely, dimly lit room and hooray — there was no wishy washy background music that's meant to sound like whales calling each other. Instead it was upbeat and lively playing at a decent volume.

I was to have a microdermabrasion treatment and then DMK Enzyme Therapy.
First Kellie had a good look at my skin and pointed out areas of concern.

She then used a brush to cover my face neck and décolletage with a cleanser. I knew the minute she started this was going to be good. I could tell from her touch and the way she spoke that I was in safe hands. After a thorough cleanse and the most exquisite heated peppermint towels (pure bliss) held to my face and neck it was time for the microdermabrasion.

This felt like a firm pull across my skin - no pain whatsoever. The treatment gently removes the top layer of damaged skin.

Then it was time for the DMK Enzyme Therapy. Kellie had said the mask would stay on for 45 minutes and it would continually tighten. "Just when you think it won't get any tighter it does. We will be right here."

Kellie used a brush to completely cover my face, neck and décolletage. I asked if I could talk while it was on. "Best not to," Kellie said.

Crikey, 45 minutes of not talking — that might be hard. While the mask was on, Serena gave me a mini pedicure and Kellie massaged my arms and shoulders. It was absolutely amazing — I felt so pampered.

I could feel the mask tightening, it felt as if my face was pulsating. It was doing exactly what it was meant to.

The 45 minutes went really face and before I knew it Kellie removing the mask with the help of the heated peppermint towels — yah the towels were back.

I was so relaxed I didn't want to talk even after the 45 minutes and I was so pleased that Kellie went about her work in silence with steady reassuring hands.

I didn't want it to end.

Finally I made myself open my eyes.

When I looked in the mirror I could see instant results. My skin looked plumped up and the redness around my nose was almost gone. Two days later as I write this my skin feels soft and subtle and my toes look delightful.

These girls are good.

■Footnote: Because number 8 is Kellie's favourite number, every eighth treatment is free, so after seven facials the eight is free.
