MANTRA BEAUTY and Body Spa owner and operator Pritika Devi is the first to admit her exclusive treatment is not a miracle maker.

"It certainly does its job as do I, however for perfect results you have to do your homework," Pritika said.

The treatment Ionithermie promises to reduce cellulite, improve and smooth the skin texture, firm and tone the muscles, lift slackened areas and flatten stomachs. It is hugely popular on cruise ships and with celebrities.

I went along to the Havelock North clinic to find out just what this treatment was all about.

I was greeted by the lovely Pritika who ushered me into a room. I filled in a form and then Pritika left the room while I got down to next to nothing. I felt a little awkward but when she came back into the room and started chatting and explaining what she was going to do I forgot I was barely dressed.

First she took some before photos (no I haven't shared them on this page - didn't want to traumatise readers) then she took my measurements. She then brushed my body with a brush made of cactus bristle, rubbed a toner over me to "balance your pH", followed by a firming cream.

Now I was primed and ready to roll. But first Pritika had to mix up this clay that was destined to cover my abdomen and thighs. The conductive thermal Aroma Clay is Ionithermie's heat and current-conducting clay masque. I liked that fact that this preparation was all done in front of me. I'm told the clay has 120 vitamins and minerals in it.

When the clay was ready she poured some of it into the receptacle on the treatment bed put a plastic cover on it and then I climbed up and settled with the "area of concern" in the clay. The clay doesn't touch your skin.

Pritika covered the front of my stomach and thighs with the remainder of the clay, galvanic faradic electrodes were then put onto my body and the area was wrapped in clingwrap. Warm towels were placed over me and then Pritika declared I was ready to go.

I was a bit nervous wondering what the sensation would be like. Pritika said she would start the treatment off on the lowest level and then increase the intensity if I was comfortable. When the machine was turned on all a I felt was a little buzzing sensation on my skin. It went on and off at three second intervals. When the intensity was increased it felt like my body would contract then release.

I didn't find it uncomfortable at all. Especially when Pritika gave me a foot massage.
"Clients can choose between a head or a foot massage while they are having treatment," Pritika said. It was bliss. Before I knew it was over. Then I was unplugged, unwrapped, and up on my feet.

Pritika then took after measurements and photos. She was smiling when she finished - I had lost an incredible 39cm all over, the most from one area was 6cm off my stomach. I had to admit that looking at the after photos my skin looked a lot toner.

"That is a good result but to maintain it you have to exercise, eat healthy and have maybe have follow up treatments," Pritika said.

"Some people just have one treatment to kickstart them onto a healthy plan, others come back for more and still follow it up with home treatments.

"It is also perfect for brides or mother-of-the-bride who want to fit into that special dress and look fantastic - you could have it on the day of your wedding just to make you feel even more confident walking down that aisle. It's what a lot of celebrities do before they walk down the red carpet. " Paris Hilton was reported as saying "she owes her pert derriere" to the treatment.

Pritika is very professional and motivating. I felt great after the treatment - I can't comment on the long term results.
