Hiking to the campsite in the national park.

Hiking to the campsite in the national park.

Mr Wheeler, chemistry teacher and HOD of science, braved a different set of pupils last week with visitors from First Years Preschool.

It is never too young to take an interest in science and the 4-year-old pupils were enthralled. With experiments taking place and the science rooms bustling with excitement, it was a memorable experience for the children and future students of Dannevirke High School.

Chantal Buckley, a Year 12 student at DHS, has had some exciting news of late. Firstly, Chantal has been selected to attend the 25th Rotary National Science and Technology Forum. Thank you to all who sponsored Chantal in her endeavour to attend this forum. I look forward to reporting on her experience. Secondly, showing her skills in many areas, Chantal has been accepted to publication in the youth short story collection

Re-Draft. As part of her level 2 assessment in her writing portfolio for English, Chantal created a short story based on World War I.

It's exciting to announce the DHS Art Exhibition that is opening in the Visual Arts Department at Dannevirke High school tonight. The official opening by Dr De Villiers is at 5.15pm, followed by viewing from between 5pm and 7pm. The event is a senior portfolio and retrospective exhibition. Students, family, staff and friends of Dannevirke High School are warmly welcomed. It is an amazing opportunity to see the extensive talent of our students. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sun, sand and surf are the words on the lips of those down at the Abel Tasman National Park for the Year 10 camp. Early pictures from the camp show excellent weather and relaxed students who are helping DoC staff care for the area. The new DHS haka has also been performed for the first time in the South Island from our students, showing their appreciation for the food and generosity of the locals. It was a great example of students from Dannevirke High School.

The Central Plateau camp arrived safely and the students look forward to traversing the mountain. Fingers crossed the weather has been fine for them. The students participating on day trips are learning new skills every day; from cooking, to swimming and playing new sports. Thank you to Mr Sedcole for putting photos up on DHS Principal's Corner on Facebook.

The Year 9 students are participating in their own programme with subject enrichment and testing from core subjects in the morning, module skills and new experiences within the classroom before lunch (I have heard there are masks and special effects involved) and, after lunch, the students are enjoying the weather, learning new sporting skills. All students are engaged and learning skills that will encourage them to be life-long learners.
