Wellington city organist Douglas Mews is to give a recital featuring the Passacaglia in C Minor by J.S. Bach, Suite No 7 in G by Handel and works by Sweelink, Mozart and Maewa Kaihau this Saturday.
Mews graduated from Auckland University with a master's degree in organ and harpsichord and continued harpsichord studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, later expanding his interest in historical keyboards to include the fortepiano.
He maintains a busy concert schedule, broadcasts for Concert FM, tours for Chamber Music New Zealand and has recorded CDs for the Concordance label.
His church musician appointments have included choir director at St Patrick's Cathedral in Auckland and at St Teresa's Church in Wellington.
He is now keyboard specialist at the School of Music in Wellington, where he teaches organ, harpsichord, fortepiano and keyboard harmony. He also accompanies many of the performance students in lessons, workshops and recitals.
Mews will also accompany a performance of the beautiful Faure Requiem in St Matthew's Church at 5pm the following day, the Sunday closest to All Souls Day. The choir will be directed by Joseph Christensen and joined by soprano soloist Janet Smith and baritone Richard Harris.
