The Warehouse staff in Hastings say about 70 old televisions a day have been taken in for recycling.
A depot, on the store's former site in Market St North, has been receiving the old style of televisions and sending them off in shipping containers to be recycled.
The Great TVTake Back began on September 21 and finishes tomorrow. By Wednesday last week, more than 10,000 had been brought in for recycling.
The Warehouse sustainability manager, Trevor Johnston, said as the scheme had no precedent in New Zealand, it was difficult to know what the response would be. "We're stoked that so many old TVs are coming in, but we suspect there must be thousands more still out there. We're getting well over 1000 sets a day. It shows just how seriously Kiwis take recycling."
All televisions returned will be recycled in an environmentally-responsible manner. Ninety-six per cent of the set components will be recycled.
