Gratify
Wanting to run a business where only she could influence how it works, and needing balance between work and family, was the motivation for Gratify hair studio's Julie "Jules" Thomas.
She went from human resources manager to hairdresser after retraining at the EIT and established Hairapy Hair Studio in October 2006.
Realising a business with a website would outperform one without, she saw an opportunity for hair products to be sold online with a user-friendly e-commerce site.
Wanting to have a brand that describes retail therapy (and not limited to hair products) she rebranded the company last year and gratify.co.nz was born.
Cranford
Cranford Hospice is the leading palliative care provider in the Hawke's Bay District Health Board region.
It has about 60 paid staff, 400 volunteers and cares for patients and their families between Takapau and Wairoa.
Cranford provides care, free, for anyone living with a life-limiting illness.
Their goal is to help people live every moment whether they are at home, in a rest home or come for a short stay in the eight-bed in-patient facility. More than 90 per cent of Cranford's patients are being cared for in their own homes.
It offers practical help, as well as emotional and spiritual support, and symptom control.
Medical and family support staff are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A registered charity, it runs as part of Presbyterian Support East Coast and 50 per cent of its running costs - $2.3 million - has to be fundraised each year.
Cranford Hospice uses digital media including its website, social media, and e-newsletters to communicate to its stakeholders.
Event Pro
Eventpro is an event management company, based in Hawke's Bay, specialising in sporting events around NZ. Since 2010 it has been primarily a family-run business with Kevin Hansen (CEO), wife Sue (office manager), and the recent addition of son Andrew (event manager) and Emma Harold-Harrison (event assistant) in late 2012.
Eventpro aims to produce events beyond stakeholder expectations. To achieve this, it works with stakeholders and contractors, researching and combining the efforts of all the staffs' delegated tasks to create high-quality events such as the Horse of the Year Show, Ride the Rhythm and Showjumping's Holy Grail.
The Horse of the Year Show is Eventpro's signature event; competitor attendance has risen from 500 in 1998 to 1800 this year. The company has grown to generate $12.5 million back into the Hawke's Bay community.
