Five-time runner-up Nanette Treloar finally has her hands on the Poverty Bay-East Coast ladies’ singles crown.

The Gizzy Waste-sponsored ladies’ and men’s singles competition were held last weekend at Waerenga-a-Hika Hall.

Treloar won the ladies’ title while Matthew Foster charged to a third men’s honour.

Ten players entered the men’s division, while eight competed in the ladies’ section.

It was a record number for the women and both divisions featured several first-time participants.

Four players remained in each division after the preliminary rounds.

In the ladies’ semi-finals, Treloar beat her 14-year-old granddaughter Sophie Haskins 10-6 while Pauline Stone led throughout for a comprehensive 12-2 win over Tina Smith.

In the final, Treloar rallied from 6-0 down after three ends against Stone to tie it up at 8-8 after the ninth end. She then picked up two shots in the extra end to win 10-8.

Having had to settle for runner-up on five occasions in previous year, Treloar was particularly happy with this victory – her 21st Poverty Bay-East Coast Indoor Bowls Centre title in total.

In the men’s semi-finals, Doc Tipene pipped Dylan Foster 7-6 after some great draw bowls kept Foster from gaining the shot in an extra end.

Matthew Foster collected a four in the seventh end of his semi-final to seal a 10-5 victory over David Lynn.

Foster continued his excellent form with a decisive 10-3 defeat of Tipene in the final to secure his third title in this event and 23rd centre title overall.
