Good save = happy firefighter

Good save = happy firefighter

A TRACTOR under repair in an engineering garage on an orchard at Ormond caught fire late yesterday afternoon but resolute work by the property owners, then firefighters, stopped the fire spreading to engulf the workshop.

The fire service received a 111 call about the problem at 4pm and despatched two city appliances and three water tankers to the Brown Road property.

“The flames from the burning tractor were just starting to hit the roof of the large garage when we arrived,” said Senior Station Officer Bernie Bull. “The people there used fire extinguishers and a small hose reel to contain the fire and they did well to do it.”

SSO Bull said apart from some damage to light fittings and building paper in the roof the garage was undamaged.

“You would have to say it was a good save, given the distance from town.”

Specialist fire investigator Derek Goodwin looked at the cause.

“It appears it was started by someone using welding gear on the tractor.”
