Opinion
My girlfriends and I attended the opening night for Musical Theatre Gisborne’s Vicar of Dibley and, quite simply, it gives the TV show a run for its money. I haven’t laughed so hard in years!
The whole experience, right from the first choir song to Alice’s butter joke (I can’t
believe she managed to remember all that) had us in stitches. It was extremely well cast with no weak link.
Particular highlights were Trevor Rice’s Jim, who managed to have everyone in tears with a simple “no no no”, Olivia White’s cute and tactful version of the ditzy Alice Tinker, and Ben Chisolm’s convincing “dodgy water works” Owen Newitt.
But it was the chemistry between the cast that made the performance so like the TV show.
The committee meetings had the comedic timing down to a T, with reactions and facial expressions to watch every second. The chemistry between Geraldine and Alice radiated “best friend” energy and their joke-telling scenes lived up to the original.
