A WEIGHT restriction for heavy vehicles more than five tonnes is in place on the East Cape Road after a giant piece of rock broke off from under the carriageway.
Tairawhiti Roads journey manager Helen Harris said the dislodged section of road and rock was about 5.5m in diameter.
“Therestriction means no heavy vehicles over five tonnes are allowed up the road. We advise anyone using the road to drive with care.
“Roadside signage is in place to alert road users and we have door-knocked at properties to tell them about the weight restriction and check on stock movements with farmers.”
The restriction was likely to remain in place until Friday. Ms Harris said contractors were at the site to widen the section of road.
