Gisborne’s famous rock slide at Rere has featured in the news in South America.
An item, in Spanish, about natural slides talks about Gisborne being the first city to see the sun and the home of opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
“But in New Zealand they know her especially
for the natural slide of Rere Rockslide, an attraction as long as it is fun: the waters of the Wharekopae River polished the rocks of her bed with great care, so much so that it is possible to slide even when stopped (or try to do it), after a little practice),” the Google translation to English says.
“People come to spend the day and play in the water, carrying everything that can be used for the waterslide: bodyboards, floats, rubber mats. The fall is 70m long.
“The slope of the Rere Rockslide is 30 degrees. Enough to have fun in complete safety. The rocks are totally smooth and the site is very safe . . . It is the longest natural slide in the world,” the news story says.
