Gisborne punk rock singer Cory Newman was at Central School yesterday talking about leadership.

The frontman for Sit Down In Front was engaged by the Aurora Education Foundation to lead the students in a discussion focused on the JK Rowling quote, “We do not need magic to transform the world; we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already”.

Aurora foundation executive director Karen Bush said Cory had much to offer in terms of leadership through his hard-learned life wisdom.

“Cory Newman is a remarkable musician and a multi-talented young man. We were delighted he could come to share his life lessons and inspire our young leaders,” she said.

“He was the ideal example of an excellent role model who faces challenges on a daily basis that most people don't even have to think about.

“The Aurora Leaders loved his zest for life and living. Cory was an absolute hit and his tenacity was something for them to aspire to,” Mrs Bush said.

For his part, Cory said he enjoyed passing on his knowledge and bringing out the best in young people.

“I particularly love mentoring and helping people to thrive.

“It was a real treat to come in and speak to the young Aurora Leaders today. They were the perfect hosts.”

Aurora specialist facilitator Rebecca Trafford said she was really impressed with how the students were able to make connections to the abstract concepts of leadership.

“They could actually give great practical examples, which showed they grasped the important attributes of what makes a good young Aurora leader.”

The Aurora foundation is a specialist gifted education provider operating in Gisborne and Wairoa, working collaboratively with Gisborne primary schools to deliver a higher learning programme for identified gifted and talented children.
