Two letters on Monday (Gisborne Herald, July 10) took my attention. The subjects of parking and the rail link were mentioned.
The cost to ratepayers for modern “smart” meters is out of all proportion to the benefit. The parking regime should be simple: First hour, main street, free. Next hour
$1. Side streets, first hour free, next hour $0.50c. The old meters, when finally worn out, removed, and the present ticket machines modified for the new system. Cost would be minimal, parking wardens as normal, job done! Councillors! Why complicate it?
This week we are (by road) cut off at the Manawatu Gorge, so the railway would be able to move freight. Except for the 2012 slips the line is OK. It only needs some vegetation removed.
To the northwest the Waioeka Gorge is closed, and like the Manawatu can be closed for days on end, and sometimes for weeks.
Building a rail line to the Bay of Plenty could be done, but freight flows would not justify the expense.
