Opinion

I recently spent another wonderful holiday in Gisborne visiting my family. I have been to New Zealand several times and always enjoyed a friendly welcome. This was, however, the first time I had seen huge cruise ships come into the bay — an amazing sight!

Having been on several Mediterranean cruises, I was flabbergasted that Gisborne has not taken the opportunity to publicise your city and New Zealand.

Every Mediterranean port has stalls or markets nearby to entice the cruisers.

Passengers on cruises only see a tiny part of the local talents each port has to offer, and on-board shops only sell what the cruise lines are contracted to sell.

The port, river and beach areas should be inviting to these passengers so they sail away with the same warm memories of Gisborne that I have!
