CANCER Society stalwarts Margaret and Graeme Lundon thought they were going to farewell drinks and nibbles when they were honoured with life membership.

The couple have been involved with the Gisborne-East Coast Cancer Society from its earliest days. Mrs Lundon announced her retirement from her governance role with the cancer society trust on July 14.

Heidi Stander, of the Cancer Society, said Mr and Mrs Lundon had enjoyed a close relationship with the cancer society trust for the last 27 years.

Mrs Lundon said her diagnosis of breast cancer in 1983 started her interest at a time when the Cancer Society did not formally exist.

“I missed the first meeting.’’

Mrs Lundon also works for the Cancer Society with a colleague as a prosthesist. She would continue in that role, she said.
