FIREFIGHTERS were called to the Masonic Building last night after a small fire started in the ceiling of one of the residential flats on the second floor.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent two crews to the building at 7pm.

“A light fitting in the ceiling of the flat burned out and started a small fire in the timberwork of the ceiling,” a senior firefighter said.

“We dealt with it with a portable extinguisher and used thermal imaging gear to ensure it was out.”

The senior firefighter said the occupant of the flat saw the fire start and called 111.
