Eastland Group is employing a record number of interns over summer in roles ranging from an environmental intern at Eastland Port to a qualified commercial pilot working in operations at Gisborne Airport.

“As a Tairāwhiti-based infrastructure company, we always have lots of projects on the go,” Eastland Group chief executive Matt Todd said.

“This gives us the opportunity to offer students real world industry experience, which can only benefit our region in the future.

“Our teams are also benefiting from their ideas and enthusiasm.”

Eastland Group has employed eight interns over the summer holiday period — Sarah Dixon, Emma Le Goff, Zara Peck, Ben McNeil, Bella Scott, Connor McIlroy, Kezia Evans and Ben McCosh.

At the head office, Sarah is working in the finance team while studying towards a Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) degree at EIT here in Tairāwhiti.

Emma, a third year engineering student at the University of Canterbury, is assisting the energy team with projects to determine ways the company can better demonstrate sustainability credentials and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This will be formalised as reporting metrics and in an emissions reduction plan so Eastland Group can meet its commitments as part of the Climate Leaders Coalition.

At Eastland Port, Zara is working as an environmental intern while studying towards a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Canterbury University. Zara has been organising and compiling the port's resource consents, environmental monitoring reports and environmental management plans.

Ben McNeil has returned to the port for a third summer and is helping manage the development of the Crawford Road gantry. This involves upgrading the concrete kerbing in the gantry to make it easier and more efficient for the loader to sweep up the bark left behind from the trucks.

University of Waikato commerce student Bella is working with the port's commercial team.

“I've been focusing on supply chain data analysis for the commercial team,” Bella said.

This has included quantifying the efficiency of environmentally-friendly debarking services for different log lengths and grades, and the frequency of wharfage across the port by different product types.

At Gisborne Airport, Connor is working with operations manager Jacob Goodyer on day-to-day operations and the introduction of new systems and processes. He recently completed his commercial pilot licence and has clocked up 300 hours of flying.

Eastland Network welcomed Kezia back for another summer, while Ben McCosh is interning for the first time.

Ben is doing tree and line inspections while Kezia is using her engineering knowledge to understand power flow, working with contractors to do the in-field assessments, and utilising mapping tools.

Ben said the internship at Eastland Network was “an amazing opportunity”.

“It has allowed me to get a large portion of the required work experience needed for an engineering degree while making connections in the professional world.”

Eastland Network general manager Jarred Moroney is highly impressed by the interns.

“They have come into the business and taken each of their tasks very seriously. They are interacting with our team here as though they are permanent staff and seem to have gained respect already.

“For a group of young people they are doing an exceptional job and setting the bar very high for future interns.”

Any students interested in internships next summer can send their CVs to peopleandperformance@eastland.nz
