The sale bulls that will go under the hammer at Wilencote Herefords at Ngatapa tomorrow have endured a couple of challenging dry seasons but they have come through well.

The stud will present 25 young bulls for sale by auction in their on-farm rostrum from 2.30pm tomorrow.

Peter and Susie Humphreys have handed over the reins at Wilencote to son Matt and his wife Megan.

“The dry weather in the past two seasons limited grass growth considerably,” Peter Humpheys said.

“This has sharpened our focus on producing cattle that can still perform in their environment as we continue to seek medium-frame cattle with high emphasis on optimum performance in a hill country environment.

“To balance these goals and perform optimally, the type of cattle required need to have a constitution that can do well on realistic inputs and still produce a quality carcase for an ever-discerning consumer,” Mr Humphreys said.

“Wilencote is committed to achieving these goals and to this end, with the many different tools available to help selection (EBV's, genomics, scanning, fertility testing etc), we still believe matching your cattle to your environment goes a long way to help achieve one's breeding goals.”

The Humphreys believe this year's sale bulls will be testament to the stud's continuing journey of doing the best they can to achieve those goals.

The stud has recently purchased two new sires from Otapawa Polled Herefords.

“They have very similar breeding philosophies, aligned to hill country quality beef production and we are excited at the potential they offer to our breeding programme.”

The new sires will offer advancements in low birth combined with carcase quality and overall performance that will provide a production lift to any herd,” Mr Humphreys said.

“With Matt and Megan having taken over the reins at Wilencote, the cattle are in good hands and will have a strong commercial flavour to their future direction.

“We look forward to welcoming you all tomorrow.”
