NGATI Porou Hauora (NPH) will host a major conference on diabetes, obesity and gout in early April.
The conference is entitled Shaping the Future of Metabolic Disease and will feature leading researchers from around New Zealand and the world. They will meet with local clinicians, kaiawahina and whanau battling thesediseases.
The meeting has traditionally been held every second year in Queenstown, but this year will be jointly organised by NPH and the Maurice Wilkins Centre which is a research centre bringing together 150 of New Zealand’s top researchers and clinicians.
Professor Peter Shepherd from the Maurice Wilkins Centre says, “This is a good example of how our newly established partnership with NPH can bring people from Tairawhiti into the national level discussions about how we go forward in addressing these very important diseases”.
Rose Kahaki, NPH chief executive, said,”having this high level meeting here in Tairawhiti will bring a national spotlight onto these important health issues and particularly the challenges we face in delivering health care in this region”.
The meeting will have sessions on the Coast at Waipiro Bay, Te Puia Springs and also in Gisborne.
High on the agenda will be discussions on how recent genetic breakthroughs can be used to contribute to better ways to prevent or treat these diseases.
The meeting will put a spotlight on innovative local programmes being run by NPH to manage and prevent type-2 diabetes and related conditions using whanau based initiatives.
