A GISBORNE family cannot wait to be one of the first worldwide to watch the new Star Wars movie.

The Solomon family of four will dress up as famous characters for the premiere of Star Wars the Force Awakens in Gisborne tomorrow night.

The plot is a mystery and Gisborne people will be some of the first to watch it unravel, dad Derek Solomon said.

“We are not sure who features in it, who is this new villain, how will he emerge . . . there are lots of unknowns.”

Mr Solomon was nine, the same age as his daughter Zoe, when he watched the first movie in the ’70s at a Toronto drive-in theatre.

“Darth Vader’s head was massive, I remember it popping up on screen. We had never seen anything like it before.

”The characters are so interesting and unique. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan, the droids. They each have their own characteristics.”

His enthusiasm passed on to his two daughters. Kya, who is seven, was hooked after watching the first three and started making lightsabers and wearing costumes.

“They like the adventure, the space odyssey."

Mr Solomon said there is a great story behind the films and this is what compels his daughters.

“They are thinking about what will happen next, which is good for inquisitive minds.”

Mr Solomon understands the Star Wars hype because he used to own a cinema in Palmerston North. He remembers university students cramming in to watch the Phantom Menace in the late ’90s.

“This new one is going to be the biggest box office hit in history. It is a big call but it has sold out all across the globe.”

The film premieres at the Odeon at midnight tomorrow.
