Fog disrupts air travel this morning

A blanket of thick fog at Auckland Airport delayed people travelling in and out of Gisborne by plane this morning.

The 6.15 flight from Gisborne Airport was delayed until just before 9am and the 9.40am flight was cancelled. The 10.45 flight out of Gisborne was looking to be on time.

The 9.15am flight from Auckland into Gisborne was cancelled.

The NZ Herald reported a total of 31 flights cancelled or delayed around the country.

Auckland Airport lifted fog restrictions at 8.21am after having them in place since 1.30am.

In that time 19 domestic flights were cancelled and 12 delayed due to the fog.

MetService meteorologist Arno Dyason said the thick fog was likely to stick around until midday.

“It is quite extensive, from Northland down to Whanganui, covering much of the central North Island too.”
