Your headline “Trespass notice for squatters in station” caught my attention because this is another case of social injustice in our own backyard.
I think this is a horrible, honky stance that is a disgrace to Maoridom. What is the Rongowhakaata Iwi Trust thinking? If this were my own iwi,I would be jumping up and down with shame and indignation and pointing the bony finger.
Ironically some of the very squatters they are evicting and victimising are more than likely their fellow Rongowhakaata whanaunga.
My own family has talked about the despicable state of the old police station for years since it was vacated and returned to the original landowners. The fact it is being left in its current dilapidated state is terrible. The bigwigs controlling this trust need to wake up and show more compassion and responsibility.
No doubt they’ll claim they’ve done enough in allowing homeless to stay there already, but why not actually dedicate this rundown, wasted building to be used permanently by the homeless in our community?
