Minor injuries in ‘Hika crash

A WOMAN was treated for minor injuries yesterday afternoon in a crash involving another car at the corner of State Highway 2 and King Road at Waerenga a Hika.

Police, Fire and Emergency NZ and St John ambulance were called to the scene at 1.50pm.

“We treated one of the drivers, a 46-year-old woman, at the scene for minor injuries,” a St John ambulance spokesman said. “She did not need to go to hospital.”

The Herald was told the driver of the other car was not at the scene when emergency services arrived.

The fire at the East Coast mill in Matawhero was in a rubbish pit — a specific burn area — and was caused by vegetation re-igniting said Gisborne senior station officer Ed Hindmarsh.

One appliance attended and the crew spent two hours controlling the fire.

There was no concern about it spreading or becoming dangerous as it was in a contained burn pit, said SSO Hindmarsh.
