Steamers rookie Sam Cane has been given a huge opportunity to impress in Super 15 rugby, though it's come at the expense of one of his provincial teammates.
Chiefs openside Tanerau Latimer has been forced to miss the two-match tour to South Africa after suffering concussion against the Crusaders on Friday
night in Mount Maunganui.
Latimer clashed heads with All Black and Crusaders prop Owen Franks 90secs into the match and was forced off for the rest of the game.
Chiefs coach Ian Foster has grabbed 19-year-old Cane from the wider training group and included him in the 26-strong squad that flew out early yesterday to play the Bulls and Lions.
Foster also believed Latimer's injury ultimately affected the result on Friday night, with his side going down 34-16.
The Crusaders had the luxury of bringing on All Black captain Richie McCaw, while Chiefs fetcher Scott Waldrom was forced to wage a lone battle with no replacements.
"We were probably one player short and Lats' injury in that first minute changed the way we wanted to execute things," Foster said. "The last 15mins was the period they started to get a bit more dominant at the breakdown, whereas our plan was probably similar to theirs but we didn't have an extra player to bring on at that time."
Cane, who made his Bay of Plenty debut last year, gets the nod as backup to Waldrom, having impressed with his demeanour and work-rate, while Latimer, fresh off the bye, has another enforced rest.
"We don't think there's anything broken but it was certainly a pretty significant head clash," Foster said. "We've already got Colin Bourke out so it's a little bit hard to take someone else over that's not quite right."
The Chiefs are languishing in 12th, having won just two matches.
Meanwhile, Manawatu coach Dave Rennie has been confirmed to take over from Foster for the next two seasons, after the incumbent announced last year he would step down at the end of this season.
Rennie said he was excited to be part of the Chiefs' campaign next year: "While we have a fair bit of experience heading off shore, we are fortunate to have strong provincial unions developing the emerging talent. For the time being, my focus remains on preparing the Manawatu Turbos side for what will be a challenging and exciting, condensed ITM Cup competition."
Chiefs squad to travel to South Africa to play the Lions at Johannesburg on April 23 and the Bulls at Pretoria on April 30:
Ben Afeaki, Nathan White, Toby Smith, Hika Elliot, Aled de Malmanche, Sona Taumalolo, Craig Clarke, Romana Graham, Isaac Ross, Hayden Triggs, Fritz Lee, Liam Messam, Scott Waldrom, Sam Cane, Brendon Leonard, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Mike Delany, Stephen Donald, Richard Kahui, Tana Umaga, Save Tokula, Dwayne Sweeney, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Lelia Masaga, Tim Nanai-Williams, Mils Muliaina.
