Women on track
Tauranga's two women's volleyball teams are on track to nab top qualifying spots for the nationals after beating their Northern League rivals in the past two weeks.
Tauranga's premier team is already assured of a place in the nationals as defending title holders, with the city's reserve team also trying to qualify.
Tauranga's second team beat Hamilton convincingly 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-20). Holly Boyle set well for the team and Katie Wood hit well from opposite. Kim Tootell was steady in the middle.
The Premier team started with three regulars missing due to work commitments. Hamilton are much stronger than last year, bolstered by a number of beach volleyballers studying at the university.
Tauranga started well, winning the first set 25-22, with Hamilton making a number of unforced errors. In the second set, despite Hamilton improving, Tauranga made only three unforced errors to win comprehensively 25-12.
Tauranga started slowly in the third and never recovered to lose it 19-25. However, the team rallied in the fourth set to close it out 25-22, winning the game 3-1. Amy Hunter played well through the middle and Carly Hona was strong at opposite. Anna Williamson again filled the setting role well.
During the weekend the teams travelled to Auckland to play Norths and Waitakere.
The second team beat Norths 3-0 ( 25-11, 25-8, 25-22) and Waitakere 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-8). Boyle again played well and is well deserving of her place in the North Island secondary schools team.
Both Zoe Wieringa and Anataia Brown enjoyed their best games of the season. Stephanie Pierce was also impressive. The side is young, with a number of age-group reps, and is playing at a level above most of their opponents.
The premiers beat Norths 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-18) with Shannen Bagge setting well and Anna Williamson, through the middle, and Andrea Tauai, on the outside, scoring strongly for the team.
The second match against Waitakere, the No 2-ranked Auckland team, was a tougher proposition, but still resulted in a 3-1 win (25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 25-11). Lisa Claassen was in outstanding form hitting on the outside and from the 3m line. Tauai, who has stepped up well to play at this level, was also hitting well. Amy Hunter blocked strongly in the middle, particularly in set four which the team won convincingly.
Against Saints (Auckland), Tauranga No 2 won 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16) and the Premiers hardly broke a sweat to win 3-0 (25-5, 25-4, 25-5), results which have left both teams at or near the top of their respective grades.
U-12s dominate
Following on from their gold medal success at April's Tauranga tournament, the Tauranga under-12 A water polo team have taken out the Queen's Birthday tournament at Mountfort Park in Manurewa.
The games proved much closer for this talented team they finished with a complete display of finals water polo to win 4-2 over the Mighty Marist Sharks from Auckland. Going through pool play with an 8-1 win/loss record, they won their semifinal against hosts Mountfort Park 5-2.
The first half of the final was tight and Tauranga turned at 1-1, but a strong team talk at halftime saw the team kick into top gear, tightening their defence and scoring twice to lead 3-1. Tauranga's goalkeeper Hamish Low then threw the ball 20m to an unmarked Malia Josephson, who scored the match winning goal to go with the two others she scored.
Daniel Dennehy scored the other goal in the final.
Josephson, the sole survivor from last year's unbeaten under-12s, set an impressive benchmark for all under-12 players to aspire to, receiving her second MVP in as many tournaments. Tireless speedster George Williams and goalkeeper Low also made the tournament Team.
Coach Karl Josephson was impressed with the dedication and strength of his team. "It is so pleasing to see this team reap the rewards of all the hard work they put into training. We are looking forward to our next challenge, the Olympic Hopefuls tournament in late September," he said.
Tauranga's B team finished an impressive fifth in A grade, with Tauranga C winning the B grade and the development team finishing a credible 7th.
Red hot start
Baywide Open netball tournament contenders Whakarewarewa Red were off to a blistering start in Rotorua as the second round of the Baywide competition was played, with the 56-goal difference in their clash with Opotiki a reflection of the calibre of the players this year, which includes a host of Netball Bay of Plenty representative players.
In a more closely fought contest, Mount Sports delivered a superb performance to overcome a determined Ngongotaha Premier team. Defenders Michelle McCarthy, Michelle Tenbroek and Joanna Weldon worked well together, supported by a strong shooting performance from Arahi Wall who shot 91 per cent.
