After an impressive opening night new car debut at Baypark a fortnight ago, the speedway fortunes of young Auckland racer Craig Cardwell took a big tumble on Saturday night.
As the field raced into turn one of the first super saloon car race Cardwell glanced off the left rear of
Cambridge driver Jarred Fletcher and his car was pitched into a series of three rolls. In the process of shedding its body panels, it also made a heavy impact with front of the roll cage smashing into the track's concrete pole line.
The HyperMac Corvette, built by New Zealand champion Shane McIntyre in Tauranga, was new a fortnight ago and had powered Cardwell to an opening night feature race at Labour Weekend.
"I'm okay but the car is hurt," Cardwell said a few minutes later.
"I'm not really sure how it happened but I think I just rode a wheel."
