Steamers No8 Colin Bourke is targeting a May return to Super 15 action after going under the surgeon's knife last week to repair his wrecked shoulder.
Bourke, 26, dislocated his right shoulder playing for the Barbarians against South Africa at Twickenham in early December.
Bourke was cleaned out in a ruck by
Springboks hooker John Smit early in the game, with the impact ripping ligaments off his shoulder joint.
He was operated on by Hamilton-based orthopaedic surgeon Chris O'Meeghan a week ago.
The Chiefs had been counting on the Bay of Plenty star as their starting No8 for the upcoming Super 15 season, with Bourke saying yesterday he expects to be able to play in at least the last seven rounds of the Super 15 and the playoffs if his recovery goes smoothly.
"Shorty [Bay of Plenty and Chiefs physio Paul Cameron] and I met with the specialist [last Tuesday] and I was being operated on the next day, which has effectively taken a month off my recovery time. Getting in before Christmas meant I didn't have to wait [until mid-January]."
O'Meeghan discussed several options with Bourke, including the possibility he could skip the knife, rehab the shoulder and hope for the best.
"But the risk was that I'd so the same thing again and need the operation anyway, and the rehab [without surgery] was going to take three months, so it made sense to have the surgery."
The extent of the injury wasn't as great as first feared, with no structural damage revealed when O'Meeghan performed the keyhole surgery.
"He thought there might have been a few issues with bone being pulled off the shoulder as well as ligaments but it wasn't too bad, which means recovery has reduced from potentially nine months to four or less."
Bourke is keeping his arm and shoulder immobilised for six weeks before the injury can be reassessed in early February.
He's targeting a possible return in late April, when the Chiefs head to South Africa for games against the Lions and Bulls, or more likely round 12 against the Highlanders in Hamilton on May 7.
"I'm missing summer training ... but I'm sure I'll get mine when I'm back ready to run.
"Once I get some movement back in the shoulder there's another two months of no contact, so there'll be plenty of running to look forward to."
The Chiefs open their season in early February.
