It was an exercise the coach never expected to pull off.
And while Sean Horan wasn't congratulating the Bay of Plenty Wasps for losing to Hawkes Bay Saracens, he was philosophical about the 80 minutes his extended squad endured.
Saracens beat Wasps 51-28 in front of a lacklustre and miniscule crowd at
Rotorua International Stadium. A child's cry near the end of the second half epitomised how some supporters were feeling, especially since Saracens had posted 30 unanswered points with mere minutes to go.
Horan said Wasps achieved what he had hoped for.
"Hawkes Bay have had a trip to Aussie together and have been working on their development," he said. "We knew they would be extremely fit and mobile. It was a good leveller for us. At club rugby and training we've been excelling but you put them on a field against this kind of opposition and that's what happens."
Saracens launched the offensive from the start and had seven points on the board within five minutes courtesy of a Sinoti Sinoti try and Mark Jackman conversion. Wasps responded and were soon level when John Stewart (Tauranga Sports) crossed the line. Wasps took the lead with a Dan Waenga (Mount Maunganui) penalty but that would be the only time the home team would be in front.
And that lead didn't last for long - a runaway try from Saracens' Hugh Reed sowing the seed for what was to come. Maselino Paulino's two second half tries also coming on the back of Wasps mistakes, the home side by this time fatigued and Saracens fresh having fielded a different 15 to the first half.
At half time it was 21-26, the score reflecting possession.
The second half didn't start how the home side had hoped for as Saracens' Richard Buckman struck an early blow against the run of the game. That set the tone, Wasps could have easily come back from the dumps but couldn't make the moves that counted. They rarely troubled the Saracens and when they did they were dealt to and Wasps capitulated.
"The biggest disappointment was all the soft tries we gave away," said Horan.
Hawkes Bay Saracens 51 (Maselino Paulino 2, Sinoti Sinoti, Hugh Reed, Star Timu, Andrew Horrell, Richard Buckman, Mark Jackman tries; Jackman 3 con, Horrell con pen) Bay of Plenty Wasps 28 (John Stewart, Jason Spice, Leighton Price tries; Dan Waenga con 3 pen, Chris Noakes con).
