A duathlon was held at The Lakes on May 19, in which Nick Freeman took first place in a time of 33:40. Hamish McDrury took second place in 33:43, while Patrick McDrury finished third in 33.55. Liam Miller came in fourth place in 34:10. Nick was head-to-head with Hamish for a while, but just beat him to the post. Spot prizes were awarded to the students who participated. A good well-organised fun day was had by all.

Swimming May 19 also saw more than 20 of our students taking part in the Bay of Plenty relay champs at Baywave.

Tom Scott achieved a fifth place out of 10 entrants in breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, freestyle and relay. Caelan Potts entered the 12-14 Year grade and achieved two ribbons for a first and a second place. Tom Hacker came away with one first and two second places in the freestyle.

Tom's team received a trophy for its first place. Thomas Culling received a second place, while Sarah Ensor received a fourth place in the Year 10-11 grade. Caitlin Hoskin, Thomas Chaney, Mandy Lonsdale, Aleisha Carter, Kate Bradley, Connie Pearl Anderson and Caitlin Knox all received ribbons for their achievements. Grace Blissett and Sarah Nicholls achieved second places in the Year 10-11 girls' 100m freestyle. We also saw Jasmine Baggaley achieve a first placing in freestyle and a second in backstroke. Congratulations to all who took part in this competition.

Hockey All of our teams got a chance to play another friendly match on Friday evening at Blake Park, despite the atrocious playing conditions with the heavy rain and the wind. The girls' yellow team had a great battle playing against Bethlehem's A girls team. Bethlehem scored the only goal with 10 minutes to go for a 0-1 result. The girls showed fantastic teamwork with every player contributing. Paige Taylor was a strong presence in midfield and Sophie Walsh showed excellent skills. Ashleigh Cornwell fought hard on defence and was named player of the day. The black team had two draws with Bethlehem College. The team played showed great potential. The boys' green team played against the Bethlehem College blue team and due to the weather and the flooding of the top port turf, their friendly game was reduced to 25 minutes one way. The boys took an early lead with Alfie Shum scoring a great goal, but the Bethlehem side managed to score two goals against us. The team showed great promise for the rest of the season. The red team is playing well with a mixture of experienced and new players. The team played very well against Omokoroa despite a 1-0 loss. Our girls' green team went down 2-0 to Tauranga Intermediate.

Basketball Our basketball teams are playing grading games at the moment. Nuggets enjoyed a 40-30 win against a committed Papamoa A team. Scoring was spread amongst the team while Jack Nock and Liam Petch brought the ball up the court well. Cody Orr and Xavier Gell had a nice run of shots with Jacob Forward, Lincoln Kissling and Jack Nock all contributing, along with some good rebounding by Sam Shipton.

The Sonics played against the Tauranga Intermediate girls team. The game ended with a conclusive win to Otumoetai 50-6. This win was topped off with a game-high point haul from Renee Bennett.

Sports Academy Training is well under way for the sports camp which will be held from June 24-28. Tough training sessions are taking place on Fridays, while the squad has also had some trainings at lunchtimes.

Netball Our netball games were cancelled last Saturday at Harbourside Netball Centre due to the heavy downpour. The weather did eventually clear, but due to a malfunction with the PA system they were forced to call the netball off. Our teams are busy with their training sessions before and after school. They are keen to get into some great games and gain playing skills.

Cross Country On May 17 we held our whole school cross country. Many parents came to support their children and encouraged them along the way. The top three girls in Year 7, collecting 100, 90 and 80 points respectively, were Liv Donovan-Grammar from Gold House's room six, Sarah Ensor from Blue House's room 18 and Grace Blisset from Green House's room three. In the Year 7 boys' race, Josh Tisch from Green Houses' room two took top honours, with Harry Low from Blue House's room 18 and Jade Staford from Green House's room five finishing second and third. Georgia Clement of Blue House took out the Year 8 race, followed home by Ruby Evans (Green House) and Lucy Street (Blue House). Zedek Macklow (Gold House) won the Year 8 boys race, with Nick Freeman (Blue House) and Thomas Randhawa (Blue House) claiming the minor placings.
