There is one week and one day until the Marra Construction Mauao sprint triathlon and the nerves have kicked in.
Last week it felt like there were one or two butterflies in my stomach, fluttering away calmly. This week it feels like there are more than a wasps zooming around at
a million miles an hour.
But then I tell myself to calm down and the nerves turn to excitement. Because I'm well prepared and I've been working hard for the past four weeks.
My personal sporting commitments, hockey and soccer, have both begun their seasons and as well as training every day, I've had to fit in these practices and games.
On Tuesday I went to my hockey training for an hour, went home and went for an hour bike, followed by a5km run immediately after.
It's fair to say I experienced the weird sensation of jelly-legs and the first kilometre of my run felt strange.
Basking in the evening sun I ran along Marine Parade and watched people eat icecreams on Main Mount Beach. I'm a little bit jealous but I've been extremely disciplined the past five weeks and have been treating my body with ultimate respect, apart from one rather large night out last weekend.
Two more weeks and I'll be one of those people on the beach eating icecream.
It's easy to resist temptation when you have a goal in mind and two weeks is not long before all my hard work is put to the test.
But what's made things extremely difficult this week is that I am currently three hours away from Tauranga in Sydney. I booked this holiday months ago, long before I signed up for this triathlon.
For a moment or two I did think about turning down the opportunity to take on this triathlon but I thought this would add an extra challenge and I would have to be disciplined to continue training while relaxing and enjoying the sights of a foreign city.
And while I've been enjoying the sights and spending lots of money, I can honestly say I have been down to the Andrew Boy Charlton pool at the Royal Botanic Gardens. This will please Sheryl McLay and my triathlon coach Brad Dixon.
With about a week to go, there is no rest and I've been given a training programme to complete while I'm away. It's hard but I'm disciplined and have stuck to the programme.
As well as pool sessions, on a trip out to Manly Beach I swam in the surf, practicing for next Sunday's event.
I've also managed to access a stationary bike and have been doing interval training to get my legs fatigued. This will simulate the cycling-running leg of the race.
It's been a bit of a struggle accessing this equipment and travelling to and from pools and gym facilities, so this week my focus has been on running.
I arrived in Sydney on Thursday and for my first run, I ran around the block - about a dozen times.
My confidence soon improved and I ventured further.
But in a random city with new sights on every corner, I got distracted easily and got lost a few times.
In a strange way I think it helped with my distance running, as I had to get back to the hostel in Kings Cross and get on with my daily schedule of shopping and eating and visiting the markets, as well as other tourist activities.
The first half of my trip has been extremely successful and I've stuck to my swimming, biking and running programme.
Let's hope the second half of my holiday is just as disciplined!
I'm returning to Tauranga next Wednesday and will update you again on Saturday, one day out from the triathlon.
