"I think there's so much happening and probably more to come which has made it a really exciting competition," Magic coach Noeline Taurua said.
"It's unpredictable, and for where we're sitting at the moment, it's just one week at a time and not getting caught up in anything apart from what we want to achieve and working hard to make that happen. In previous years, I would, from round one, be following the table and have all the scenarios planned, but this year I haven't even looked at it. That's all been fairly non-existent in our environment.
"There's still the byes to come, there's still Australian teams having to play each other and who's to know what's going to happen. It's a lot of wasted energy and I would rather that energy is directed on ourselves."
A re-jigged midcourt, including Silver Ferns' wing defence Joline Henry taking up the centre's bib, has coincided with an impressive momentum shift from the Pulse.
Well beaten by 10 goals the last time the pair met, the reinvented team from the capital will fancy their chances of giving the Magic a run for their money. They also remain an outside chance to make the finals series.
"I think they will be confident coming up against us," Taurua said. "With Joline [Henry] in there at centre, she's quite a directive player and has added leadership to their attacking end which previous to that has been touted as a weakness.
"I also think Katarina Cooper going into wing defence for them has played a big role and added to an already strong defensive end. So, those changes have probably balanced them out a wee bit more."
In terms of continued overall improvement, Taurua said she would like to see more discipline on the final execution at the attacking end, while on defence continued contesting of the ball.APNZ
