Gisborne rider Matt Hunt (Yamaha) climbed to third overall in the series.
Completing a successful evening for the MotoCity Suzuki squad from Mount Maunganui was Rhys Carter (Papamoa) who took out the final round Lites (250cc) honours.
Two seconds followed by a win earned Carter the final round honours and he also finished third in the championship behind Queenstown racer Scott Columb (Suzuki) and Australian visitor Geran Stapleton (Honda) who each won a race at Taupo in an evenly-matched Lites tussle.
With the Supercross season now complete the top riders switch back to motocross mode with the Valley Champs meeting at Patetonga this Sunday and the New Zealand Motocross GP at Woodville over the January 26-28 weekend.
The four-round NZ Motocross Championship then starts at Timaru on February 12 with round two at Patetonga on February 19, Pukekohe on March 4 and the final at Taupo on March 18.
Frost shows pace
BMW Superbike racer Sloan Frost and his Tauranga-based M1 Motorsport team made some solid moves at the second round the New Zealand Superbike Championship at Timaru last weekend.
Frost had a difficult start to the national series at Ruapuna a week earlier but is showing the pace to suggest he can move up from fifth on a close-fought leaderboard. Although he had qualified second fastest behind Australian star Robbie Bugden, the first race saw Frost finish back in seventh place. But he found form in race two and tucked in behind Bugden's Suzuki and comfortably led home nine-time Superbike champion Andrew Stroud (Suzuki). Two wins at Timaru puts Bugden into a commanding lead in the series with 87.5 points while BMW rider John Ross (Christchurch) has 53 and Stroud is on 49. First round winner Dan Stauffer (Australia), who only contested the first round, is on 42.5 and Frost is fifth with 41 points. The Superbike Champs are at Teretonga (Invercargill) this weekend, Hampton Downs (March 18-19) and Taupo (March 24-25).
Well-judged win
Tauranga's Brent McClymont drove to a well-judged win at Rotorua's version of the BOP Saloon Car champs that were held as a support event on the World Invitation Super Stock programme at Paradise Valley Raceway on Saturday night. Baypark drivers formed the majority of the 10-car grid and McClymont was the class of the field with the fastest lap in all three races. He won the opening heat from grid six, the second heat from pole position and worked his way through the pack from grid nine to finish third in heat three and seal the title with 58 points. Baypark racers Chris Taylor (Tokoroa) with 54 points and Paul Cressy (Matamata) on 52 completed the podium. This weekend the New Zealand Saloon Car Grand Prix is being raced at Stratford Speedway. Baypark Speedway has restored the popular La-Z-Boy saloon car series to the calendar, starting at the next meeting on January 28. The series adds a much-needed special promotion for the saloon car class and will be decided over seven races and three nights. The sponsorship by Barry Muir's Furniture Gallery will offer a chair to the series winner and another to a race fan as a lucky programme prize at the final round. The second is on February 4 with two races and the three-race final round is February 25.
Teen in fine form
Te Puke teenager Michael Scott continued to make an impression on his step up to the Formula Ford category during round two of the New Zealand Championship at Invercargill's Teretonga circuit last weekend. The Te Puke High School student was third in the Saturday afternoon race and then posted a fourth and another third placing on Sunday. Those results consolidate Scott's second placing in the championship behind defending champion Andre Heimgartner (Auckland) who is unbeaten in six races to date. The series continues this weekend at Levels Raceway near Timaru.
