If you're going to pick a moment to shine in foursomes, the final of Bay of Plenty's pennant golf championship in Taupo is as good a time as any.

Mt Maunganui have battled all year in foursomes but got the formula spot on at the right end of the season. They claimed crucial 3-1 wins in the alternate shots format in both their semifinal win over Omanu and Sunday's final against reigning champions Tauranga at Taupo's Centennial course.

Mount were 7 to 4 winners over Tauranga on a bitterly cold day in Taupo, kicking on from their morning foursomes, which were cut to nine holes by frost, to earn 4 points from the eight singles matches and seal their first championship since 2009.

Mount manager Keith Smith said it was a good time for their foursomes combinations to click.

"As you know we've struggled a bit in foursomes all year so to go 3-1 ahead was decisive for us because it was obvious the singles matches were always going to be tight."

Owen Kendall and Bailey Smith and Brad Kendall and Campbell Irvine won for the Mount, with Jason Madden and Dave Enright and Mark Hughes and Hayden Beard halving their matches.

Smith said with the heavy frost delaying the start, it was vital to win holes early.

"Nine-hole foursomes changed things significantly and gave you no time to recover if you got behind early. Alternate shots over half the course meant it was over quick."

Both Kendalls, Owen and Brad, grabbed decisive singles wins, with Owen beating Tauranga's Richard Craven 4 and 3 and Brad, at No1, exacting revenge on Tauranga's Eddie Burgess for last year's playoff loss with a 3 and 2 victory.

"We owed Tauranga one from last year and Brad was one guy who wanted redemption and got it," Smith said. "As bookends at opposite ends of the order, Owen and Brad were superb."

Jason Madden was all square with Ben Shanley playing the last, a tricky 210m par three into a stiff wind.

"Once again Jason came to party. It was so cold and windy guys were hitting driver into the 18th and Jason put his in the middle of the green and two-putted for par, while Ben missed left and didn't get up-and-down, leaving us needing a half from someone else to seal it."

Karl Knedler, John Waretini and Blair Murdock gave Tauranga a glimmer of hope with wins but No4 Mark Hughes rammed the door shut, fighting back from 2-down at the turn to beat Hayden O'Donnell 3 and 2 with a barrage of late birdies.

Kawerau won the senior A division 5-4 over Tauranga and will now lodge a challenge to play Whakatane, who finished bottom of the championship division, at a neutral venue for promotion.

Omanu won the silver ladies pennant in a tight tussle with Mt Maunganui at Tauranga.
