Jono Boult scored more runs in a weekend than some cricketers collect in a season, yet the taste of disappointment was still heavy on his tongue.
The 20-year-old Tauranga batsman set a new record in Western Bay premier club cricket on Saturday, smashing a majestic 200no in a one-day game against
Mount.
He also added a fine 77 for Bay of Plenty in the opening match of the Northern Districts one-day tournament in Taupo yesterday _ but that's where the regrets came in.
Their opponents Northland, having racked up 264/7 in their 50 overs, fought back to dismiss the last Bay of Plenty batsman on exactly the same score, with Northland awarded the points because they lost fewer wickets.
A subdued Boult admitted the Bay team were pretty gutted, although they still qualified for the semifinals with the best losing performance. He was far more effusive with his deeds on Saturday, however, when he opened the batting for Cadets on Blake Park.
"Yeah, I was pretty happy with that," he chuckled.
"I just played the way I normally play and it came off. The bowling was all over the show and I tried to change their length with a few charges and then went after them. I was seeing it well and it was just one of those days."
The previous highest score was held by former Northern Districts batsman Mike Wright, who once scored 190 in a club match.
Boult's Cadets and Bay of Plenty team-mate, quick bowler Campbell Wilson, has spent 14 seasons playing senior cricket but he's never seen a weekend like this one.
"It was a funny old weekend ... although the draw wasn't that funny," Wilson quipped.
"That's the best I've seen Jono bat by a long way and it's the best innings I've ever seen."
Wilson also starred with 6-59, his third five-wicket haul of the season, although he admitted to some disquiet when Mount pair Dale Swan and Mark Divehall were at the crease.
"The deck was a bit of a road really and, to be honest, when they were only a couple down we thought we were stuffed. The wicket wasn't doing anything and they were putting us everywhere.
"But we managed to open up a hole at one end and got through."
Mount were eventually all out for 261, while Greerton posted their first win of the competition, clinically beating Te Puke at Pemberton Park.
Meanwhile, Bay of Plenty meet Poverty Bay today in one ND one-dayer semifinal, while Northland and Hamilton square off in the other match.
Yesterday's result: Northland 264/7 (Ben Cochrane 95no, M Tulloch 47, D Goodwin 40, T Southee 35; A Hoogstraten 3/47, M Sweetman 2/63) tied with Bay of Plenty 264 (Jono Boult 77, L Howell 50, D Sczygiol 30, E Moore 25, K Williamson 21)
