And in New Zealand that description isn't confined to the tight arena tracks, sprint distance races and the elbow-to-elbow first corners. It also sums up the national title chase which packs all three rounds into the space of just 10 days.
The Supercross Nationals werewrapped up on Saturday when the Addiction SX track - which is part of the Digger McEwen dirt bike facility at Taupo - celebrated its first birthday.
Also celebrating was Suzuki with Kiwi motocross number one Cody Cooper (Papamoa) racing to the Senior Open (450cc) title and Queenstown rider Scott Columb returning from a long injury layoff to take out the Senior Lites (250cc) crown.
Cooper won seven times and also posted two second places as the series started at Timaru, moved on to Motueka and ended at Taupo. Runner-up Justin McDonald (Honda) from Christchurch beat Cooper just once as did Motueka's Josh Coppins (Yamaha), who joined the series after missing the Timaru opener and still managed fourth overall.
The Lites class saw Columb build a solid lead in the South Island rounds before battling with Aussie Geran Stapleton (Honda) and Papamoa's Rhys Carter (Suzuki) at the finale.
It was Carter who took the final round with the trio each scoring a race win but Carter's two second placing out-pointed his rivals and the trio were separated by only four points at the end of the day. But Columb had the title firmly in his grasp and headed off Stapleton by 18 points with Carter four points further back.
The Supercross Nationals also feature junior racing on 250cc and 85cc machines. Timaru's Josh May (Honda) raced to the Junior 250cc title and Hamilton's rising star Josiah Natzke (Yamaha) went through the nine-race series unbeaten.
