Tauranga Boys'
Super 8 Cricket tournament
The First XI travelled to Palmerston North last week with high hopes of making a tilt for the title. The Super 8 tournament is an opportunity for new players to make their mark in the top team and every school has a new contingent to compete for the title.
Game 1 v Hastings Boys' High School - loss by three wickets. Ben Musgrave made a great start to his first match as captain, winning the toss and batting on a good wicket scoring 92 in a 162-run partnership with Gareth Wallace.
Game 2 v Palmerston North Boys' High School - loss by 63 runs. Musgrave was again a rock in his batting line-up, holding the chase together before being dismissed for 68. New players Harry Semple and Josh Oakley had a partnership that gave renewed hope, but the required run rate became too steep in the end.
Game 3 v Napier Boys' High School - loss by one wicket. Semple and Oakley again stepped up to the mark with 60 and 53 respectively to rescue our decimated batting effort.
Game 4 v Palmerston North Second XI - win by four wickets. James Boyd was almost unplayable for the opposition, finishing with deserved figures of 5-7 off 10 overs.
While the results and our final position were disappointing, there were many fine individual performances throughout the week. The players are improving so rapidly we will be back to winning ways before too long.
Lawn bowls
The TBC lawn bowls team had a strong representation in the New Zealand Secondary Lawn Bowls Nationals in December.
In the pairs, Stefan McCartain and Nathan Aldridge finished second and Taylor Duncan in the singles also finished second. Brendon Walton, a fourth member of the team, made the semifinals in the singles.
Rowing
The Tauranga Boys' College rowing squad has just competed at the first regatta for 2013. The Cambridge Town Cup (KRI #2) was probably one of the hottest regattas seen for a while. All three days were really hot and had a mixture of wind conditions which caused a large range of times for crews. In all it was a fantastic regatta, with our squad coming away with 17 finals on Sunday - 11A finals, four B finals and two C finals. A great result from all of the boys.
A special mention to the novice boys who beat the under-16s on the line in their B final - very impressive. We look forward to what you boys can do toward the big regattas in March.
Tauranga Girls'
We have had many girls continuing to participate in the sporting arena over summer and bringing home some amazing results for Tauranga Girls College.
Kayaking
Suzy Cummings competed in the Australian Secondary Schools Kayaking Championship where she gained two silver medals in both the Under-18 K1 and C2 teams. She also competed in the Australian Open Kayaking Nationals where she gained two gold medals in the Under-18 state team K1 and Open Women Club Team K1, and she won a silver in the Under 16 C2 Mixed and bronze in the Under 18 DR rapid sprints.
Year 13 student, Haylee Dangen, has also achieved amazing results in kayaking, and has been selectedfor the NZ Junior and the NZ Senior Representative teams.
Beach volleyball
At the National Age Group Beach Volleyball Championships, Alice Bain and Alex Lawrence won the Under-19 Girls division. Emma Bain and Kiana Tawa won the gold in the Year 10 division at the Junior North Island Beach Volleyball Championships and went on further to win the National Age Group Beach Volleyball Championship in the Under-17 Girls division. Georgia Coughlan and Selena Wright won silver at the Junior North Island Beach Volleyball Championships in the Year 9 division.
Track and field
At the New Zealand Secondary School Track and Field Championships held in Dunedin early December, our road race senior girls team of Isabella Kirk, Casey Blackwell and Simone Rockliffe won gold in the three-person race. Our juniors also did well in this event with Kirsty Burrows, Naomi Stewart and Rose Barker winning silver in the junior three-person race. Burrows has also been named in the triathlon team to represent NZ in London in September.
Also at the track and field champs, Amy Robinson placed second in the 100m, third in the long jump and third in the hurdles in the senior girls division. She was also named the Shining Star and named in the New Zealand Paper team.
Abby Goldie placed third in the 100m for senior girls. Amy and Abby travelled to Sydney on January 14 to compete in the Australian Youth Olympics Festival for athletics. Both girls won silver in the 4x100m relay, breaking two NZ age records. Amy also placed fourth in the long jump and fifth in hurdles. Abby won silver as a member of the Swiss relay team.
Hockey
Amy Robinson and Michelle Prendiville have also been successful in hockey over summer. Both were part of the NZ Under-18 team that played the US Under-21s in a four match test series from January 8-12 in Auckland. The results 2-1 win to NZ, 0-6 loss to US, 3-5 loss to the US and a 2-4 loss to the US. Robinson, Prendiville and Katie Horan competed in the Beach Hockey nationals on Mount Main Beach where they placed second overall in a combined team with Tauranga Boys' College.
