Te Puke
Basketball: Our senior boys played a tight game against Matamata B on Wednesday. They kept their defence up and made some awesome shots. They only just missed out on winning by three points.
Surfing: Last Friday our team entered the scholastic champs held down Tay St in Mount Maunganui. Everyone had a great time, there were no clouds in the sky and the surf was decent. Congratulations to Timi Rae who finished fourth overall in the under-18 boys section and has made it through to the national secondary schools champs.
Rugby: It was a big game for our first XV boys who took on Mount Maunganui. They played hard and kept their defence up but the Mount snuck through to score, winning the game 24-10. Our under-15s had their first game in the premier division against Opotiki. They played hard but unfortunately they couldn't keep Opotiki back. Keep at it boys. Our girls' rugby team will take on Taupo next. Play hard girls.
Football: A bit of a quiet weekend for football as both our first XI teams had a bye. Our second XI had a definitive win against Papamoa Strikers 9-0. Our third XI came up against some strong defence from Tauranga Boys' College but managed to score two goals against them, although the final score was 8-2 to TBC.
Our girls' second XI had a good game against TGC senior Gold, defending very well and even scoring a goal against them. Final score was 2-1 to Tauranga Girls' but overall a great effort from our football teams.
Hockey: Our first XI boys took on Tauranga White in a top of the table clash for premier boys. They started well and were rewarded with a goal in the first 10 minutes, then another before halftime. Our boys held it together and were too much for Tauranga to handle. The final score was 5-1 to Te Puke.
Our girls' first XI Fusion took on Mount Mystics and played an amazing game. The team had a good win, scoring two field goals in each half, the final score was 4-1 to Te Puke. Player of the match goes to Rebecca Black who worked hard in defence and set up many good runs on attack. Well done to our hockey teams. Keep up the great work.
Squash: Last week the Bay of Plenty secondary schools individual champs were held at the Te Puke and Tauranga courts. We had some great results. Our division one girls had a great day with two Te Puke girls playing for first and second. Samantha Brown was the winner on the day, with Abby Wotten second and Rachel Thomas fourth.
Rachel Schultz also did well, finishing third in the second division. Our division two boys played hard and ended up playing off against Tauranga Boys' for first, second and third. Mitchell Jensen was second while Josh Bennett just missed out on third. We had two boys in our division one team, Hayden Horscroft and AJ Jensen, who played brilliantly on the day and held their seeded positions.
Tauranga Boys'
Our first XV rugby team played Massey High School midweek, with both teams looking at this contest as a mid-year 'progress test' and in particular a warm-up for Tauranga Boys' College's impending game against Rotorua Boys' High at Nicholson Field on Saturday.
Tauranga Boys' took control immediately, running hard and true into the opposition, forwards passing the advantage line several times followed by effective and accurate ball placement.
At halftime the score was 21-7 to Tauranga Boys' College. The second half started as the sun set, daylight fading fast as the two sides seemed better matched, with spurred enthusiasm in the Massey side, but Tauranga Boys' prevailed, winning 42-12.
Last week the Bay secondary schools individual squash championships were held. We entered eight students - Dominic Culpitt, Zayne Thompson, Shaun Armstrong, Brad Douglas, Bayley Sisson, Daniel Hintz, Brad Amos and Tom Kearney. Bayley Sisson was a standout at the tournament. Although he was top seed in the event he played with a lot of composure and accuracy.
After four games in four hours he had to play the final. In what turned out to be a great battle, Bayley prevailed to win division two, demonstrating great ball control and length. Other notable results were Zayne third, Dominic seventh and Brad Douglas eighth. Division one was held on June 1 at the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre.
Highlights of the day were the final matches between our boys. The third and fourth playoff was a battle between Alex Revington and Jamie Oakley, estimated to be their 30th tournament match-up. With both having hard tough semifinals only 40 minutes earlier this was always going to be a tough one. Unfortunately for Jamie early mistakes cost him any chance of winning as Alex stayed composed to win the match 3-2.
The final was contested by Alex Oakley and Joseph Lyons. Alex lost the final against his brother in 2011 and was hoping to go one better this time and he did. Joe put up a great fight and played an outstanding match but mistakes at crucial times halted his momentum.
Tauranga Boys' first XI hockey team and Mount Dinos both came out firing in an even, fast paced game but Tauranga Boys' broke the deadlock 15 minutes in with two quick goals and won 6-1.
The Tauranga Boys' College first XI football team played Cambridge High School. Coming off a solid 3-0 win in our previous qualifier we were looking for a win to solidify our place in the top 16 at nationals. We led 2-1 at halftime and punished them at the back to pull away with a 5-1 win.
The senior A basketball team had another week of pleasing results, beating Bombers 2 in the men's A grade league by 17 points to sit in first place.
Tauranga Girls'
The past week has been successful for Tauranga Girls' College, with sportswomen not even having a break over the long weekend.
The Mount Maunganui 10km run was held on Sunday, with some very good results. In the female 15-34 category, PE teacher Michelle Pollard came second with an impressive time of 43:57, with student Casey Blackwell third, only a second behind. Sports captain Vivien Conway was fourth in 46:12 and Brittany Marshall fifth in 47:21. In ninth place was Simone Rockcliffe, 14th was Tessa Whale, 15th Anna Cullum, and Rebecca Wilson came in 17th.
Last week a team of girls competed in the Bay of Plenty secondary schools individual squash tournament. It was a great day of squash from all players whose grades ranged from the most experienced B graders to the least experienced ungraded players. Lauren Clarke was the plate winner in division one, and in division three Michelle Prendiville won overall gold, with Sam Fredheim taking silver and Ruby Gooders fourth.
Weekend sport carried on as usual with the football teams doing well again. The first XI had a convincing win against Mount Maunganui College first XI 9-0, and the second XI had a good game against Otumoetai College first XI, coming out on top 3-0.
The third XI had a close game against Rotorua United Legends, drawing 2-2, and Junior A won comfortably 7-0 against Aquinas College second XI.
Our netballers were also victorious, with the League 1 team winning 45-27 against Te Puke High School Senior A. TGC League 3 also had a win against Te Puke High Senior B 42-24. Junior A had a win against Te Puke High Junior A 68-13, TGC 10A beat Otumoetai Junior 2 21-25 and TGC 9A won against Te Puke High Junior B 44-12.
Mount Maunganui
Mount Maunganui College can be proud of two new caps in New Zealand teams with Nate Moore and Jackson Ellis making the national under-17 indoor volleyball team. Their selection comes after several training/selection camps, the last held over Queens Birthday weekend in the Mount. They will travel to Australia to compete in the school holidays.
Congratulations to Kaydi O'Connor Stratton who has been selected in the New Zealand junior development team for canoe slalom, competing in the Australian nationals and secondary champs in January 2013.
Mount's first XV has moved up to first division after the first round in the Bay of Plenty rugby season and the boys' under-15 and under-14 teams have both made the premiership grade for what now becomes the Baywide competition. The boys' football team are unbeaten in their division and the girls' first X1 had their first loss against Tauranga Girls' premier team.
The netball teams are having some close results with the Junior A girls first equal in a four-way tie. Tuis, Karaka and Kiwis are second and Tawa, junior B and Rurus all third.
Aquinas
Aquinas College waterpolo players returned from competitions in Auckland and Hamilton over the long weekend with big smiles ... and medals and outstanding player accolades.
The Aquinas Year 9/10 team ended up runners-up in A grade competition in Hamilton. The team played extremely well on the first day, playing four games for four wins.
They lost to Rangitoto College Boys in the final round robin match, meaning they had a tough semifinal against the top seed from the other draw, Hamilton Boys' High. An upset win 8-5 meant that Aquinas played Rangitoto Boys again in the final, going down 9-4.
This is an outstanding result for a mixed team, up against a boys only team from the largest secondary school in New Zealand.
The team was Patrick Low, Cayne Dew, James Sharp, Grace Eglinton, Michelle Dykes, Tahlia Trembath, George Newman, Morgan Brockelsby and Daniel Dennehy. The team arrived home with silver medals yesterday and Cayne Dew was named most outstanding player.
Several Aquinas Year 7 and 8 players competed in various Tauranga under-12 teams in Auckland over the long weekend too.
Josef Schuler, Hamish Low and Kayla Dew were all part of the bronze medal Tauranga A team. Narrowly losing 1-2 to eventual A grade winners Murray's Bay in the semi final, they went on to secure a 9-2 victory against Waitakere for third place. Both Kayla and Hamish were named in the seven-person tournament team. Outstanding effort!
Alice Williams and Leon Castle played well in the Tauranga B and C teams respectively, finishing 7th and 8th overall. Tom Wilson and Zac Watson were members of the Tauranga Hurricanes who secured a bronze in the B grade, while Francesca Piceno played in the Tauranga Storms, narrowly missing out on a top four spot.
These collective results follow other success stories last term when Aquinas won the junior secondary boys and girls local competitions, and the intermediate A grade. Aquinas College is competing at the highest level and flying the Aquinas and Tauranga club flags.
Aquinas College wishes Grace Eglinton and Cayne Dew the best in their upcoming New Zealand under-15 commitments, and to Patrick Low, Daniel Dennehy, Morgan Brockelsby, Sam Wylie and Michelle Dykes who will join Grace and Cayne in the Tauranga representative under-15 teams who head to Auckland in four weeks to compete in the Pan Pacific games.
Katikati
Football: Our girls' first XI played Mount College, losing 4-3, and Whakatane last Saturday. With the long bus trip taking its toll, the Katikati girls never really set into their usual rhythm against Whakatane, leaving the first half open to give Whakatane a few goals. However the girls never let their heads down and came back with a goal after Emma Roberts finished from a penalty.
Although nothing seemed to go Katikati's way, including the decisions made by the ref, they played hard, with the final score 5-1. Congratulations to left back Hayley Nicol who had a superb game and got player of the day.
Yesterday a team of eight year-seven and eight girls travelled to Tauranga to play in an indoor football tournament. The team consisted of Cara Calway, Tara McPerson, Zara Adams, Rebecca Holwerda, Lucy Douglas, Tyler Davidson, Gemma Young and Linsey Jack. Katikati played three tough games against boys' teams Bethlehem, Papamoa and Aquinas. After playing hard throughout the day the girls saved the best for last, winning the final against Papamoa girls 3-0. Our boys' team also played and after some hard fought games they were placed third.
Netball: Katikati College 8A took on The Dream Team, winning 30-16 with player of the day being Caitlin deGraaf. Our 7B netball team had an exciting win against Papamoa College, 11-0. Our senior A netball beat Bethlehem College Senior A 28-23. Katikati College played a very good defensive game, putting plenty of pressure on the opposition, with player of the day Heidi Parkin at goal defence.
Hockey: Our intermediate girls' team won 13-0 against Otumoetai Intermediate and our mixed intermediate team won 5-1.
Rugby: Our under-15s have made the premier competition which is a great achievement for the boys. They are relishing the challenge to compete against the best in the Baywide competition and strive to achieve highly. The team is coached by ex-students Caleb Williams.
Otumoetai
Our football junior boys' A team earned a well deserved 3-1 victory away to top-of-the-table Bethlehem thanks to goals from Louis Morris, Jim van der Vorm and Hayden Neale. The result didn't tell the true story of the dominance that Otumoetai held throughout the game thanks to many strong performances all over the park. A fantastic team effort.
Netball Premier 1 had a convincing win against Tauranga Girls' College League 2, with strong play from Abi May and Sam Henare in the midcourt and Julia Hartley and Claudia Richardson combining well with excellent shooting stats, finishing third in division one after the grading round.
The Prem 2 team had another strong win over Tauranga Girls' senior Open and sit second in their division. Our junior 1 won to finish first equal at top of their division. Premier reserve 2, development white and 9A all had wins and finished at the top of their tables. Good luck to all the teams for the championship round.
