The last time Tauranga Sports missed the Baywide semifinals Helen Clark was Prime Minister, Outrageous Fortune was the top local television show and Crazy Frog was the biggest selling song of the year.

That was back in 2005 and now the club with more Baywide titles than any other is in a desperate fight to make the playoffs in three weeks' time.

Tauranga are seventh out of eight teams on nine points with Greerton Marist (13), Rotoiti (14), Rangataua Sports (16), Te Puna (16), Te Puke Sports (17) and Mount Maunganui Sports (20) ahead of them chasing the top four.

The equation is simple - Tauranga must beat Greerton Marist at the Domain tomorrow and Rangataua away next week to have any chance if other results go their way.

Tauranga's misfortune in recent weeks has seen Mount Maunganui jump from an even playing pack this season to be favoured to go one further than losing last year's final to Rangataua.

Tomorrow the Jordan Cup holders face second-placed Te Puke Sports in what could be a Herculean battle at Murray Salt Stadium.

Mount Maunganui coach Rodney Voullaire knows they have much more work to do yet.

"A key focus for us is to get the win as we need more points to secure ourselves a semifinal," he said.

"To do that we need to utilise our systems and how we are playing at the moment, keep doing all our little jobs that we need to do individually to allow the team to work together."

Voullaire will be urging his forwards to step up from last week's excellent win over Tauranga to allow his talented backline to cut loose.

"We know Te Puke are pretty hard up front and we are going to work our butts off and apply a lot of pressure there, making sure we are tackling hard and applying a lot of pressure at the breakdown and hopefully get a bit of ball to play with.

"We have quite a nice backline at the moment that are gelling well and we just hope that they will continue to do so."

It has been a frustrating few weeks for Te Puke with their own errors costing them wins over Rotoiti and Tauranga.

Coach Craig Jeffries needs his team to step up and deliver a more consistent performance at home against the competition leaders.

"If we want to win back the Jordan Cup we will need to be better than we've been all year. We have had good patches within games but not for entire matches," he said.

"We need to cut out mistakes and use the ball well when we have it and we'll be in the game. Give the Mount a sniff and we'll be chasing the game. They are very good at taking chances."

In the other Premier 1 games, Te Puna and Rangataua both travel to Rotorua. Rangataua will be hot favourites to beat disappointing Whakarewarewa but Rotoiti are hard to beat at Emery Park so Te Puna need to be at their best.

The Baywide women's teams enter the second week of round 2 of the competition, with sides splitting into respective Cup and Trophy divisions.
