Bay of Plenty left it late on the first day of the Lion Foundation NZ Surf League before surging into the lead in the under-16 division.

A rampant home side nailed wins in the last four events on Mount Maunganui's Main Beach, to overhaul a strong first-day effort by Auckland. Bay of Plenty took out the mixed ski relay, the ironman and diamond lady and the final Dearlove relay to finish on 117, five points ahead of Auckland.

Auckland wins were scarce but they consistently accumulated points throughout the 29 events, though were left to rue a disqualification in the boys' ski race.

Wellington sit within striking distance in third, with 94 points, while Gisborne are fourth on 91.

The standings are reversed in the under-14 division, meanwhile, with Auckland leading on 95 points and Bay of Plenty second on 87. Gisborne (83) hold third place, although Taranaki and Wellington are poised to pounce on 78.
