Volleyball
Auckland teams claimed the major spoils at the Northern Zone interprovincial under-15 volleyball championships at Tauranga's QEII Youth Centre yesterday.
Auckland put out Bay of Plenty B in the girls' semifinal yesterday morning, with Bay of Plenty A downing Manukau in the second semi.
Auckland dominated the final, with Manukau grabbing third
in a playoff with Bay B.
In the boys' final, Bay of Plenty B found the going too tough and lost to Auckland. Bay B had earlier upset their provincial A team in the semifinals.
Cricket
Bay of Plenty's most promising cricketers have been recognised this week with selection in Northern Districts age-group teams, giving further recognition to the region's decade-long junior development programme.
Three Bay of Plenty players have been selected in the ND under-18 team that will play in the national under-18 tournament in Christchurch next month.
The ND team were picked on the form shown at the recent senior secondary schools tournament in Gisborne.
Bay of Plenty Coastland batsmen Joe Carter and Sean Davey, along with Bay Lakeland allrounder Chanse Perham, will travel south with the ND team. All three bring quality cricket experience to the ND side.
Carter made his debut for the Bay of Plenty development side in 2009, while Sean Davey was named in the tournament team after last season's under-17 national tournament.
Pip Thickpenny's undoubted allround talent was recognised with his selection in the ND under-17 team to take on Auckland next month. He is joined in the team by Tom Clout, Alex Oakley and Elliott Timoti.
The success of Bay of Plenty at the recent junior secondary schoolgirls' cricket tournament in Rotorua was acknowledged with three players being selected for ND - Jacinta Coleman, Kate Anderson and Jo Tarris.
Yachting
Tauranga's Peter Burling and crewmate Blair Tuke are leading yachting's 49er Sail Melbourne regatta, the class' first World Cup regatta of the season, after ultra-consistent fleet racing through their first nine races.
The pair have registered just one finish outside the top four, where they missed wind pressure inside while sailing downwind and saw half the fleet go around them.
But they bounced back to win the next race in light breeze.
After nine race the pair led ISAF 49er world No1-ranked Austrians Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch by two points, with a few more points back to the top United States crew, then German and Danish crews.
Top Australian pairing Nathan Outteridge and Ian Jensen are uncharacteristically struggling back in seventh place overall.
Burling and Tuke are showing good form following up from last week's win at International Sail Sydney.
Waterpolo
Mt Maunganui College's Rebecca Parkes and Daniel Kayes are in the thick of it this weekend, competing for New Zealand against Australia and South Africa at the International Water Polo schools series at Auckland's Millennium Institute of Sport and Health.
The event is an extension of the transtasman series run annually between New Zealand and Australia secondary school national representative teams, with the venue alternating between Australia and New Zealand. Currently the Australian teams hold the shields for both the boys and girls' series. South Africa last attended the competition in New Zealand four years ago.
Swimming
The first of the summer's SMARTS Team Shorebreak Inc Ocean series was held this week in a calm Pilot Bay, with the series this summer including paddling and running options, as well as the ocean swims.
The inaugural run around the Mount was won by comfortably by Chris Morrissey, and the two-lap paddle by surf athlete Damian Munro.
The 1500m ocean swim was won convincingly by Papamoa Surf Club swimmer James Ryan, backing up on his strong performances in the Surf Life Saving New Zealand national trials earlier in the month.
Second was fellow Papamoa SLSC swimmer youngster Mason Pickering who beat Team Shorebreak Triathlete Owen Miller in the wade to the finish line.
The women's race was closer, with less than a second separating first-placed ITU triathlete Rebecca Kingsford and open water swimmer Jess Rodgers. Sarah Mortimer was third.
As is usual in these events the masters men's and women's were the most closely fought categories, with many using these swims as opportunities to prepare for the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman, learning about tide movements. Michael Pugh and Sandi Kaio took line honours from Matthew Pickering and Lynette Youk Gong respectively.
A great effort by 11-year-old Blake Horne (under-14) was the highlight of the younger age groups.
Next week's race is on Thursday on the Mount Main Beach to give those preparing for the Eves Surfbreaker triathlon a chance to try out the swim course. The run will also mirror the Surfbreaker course.
Athletics
The highlight of the Athletics Tauranga club night this week was the New Zealand masters women 45-49 age group record for 5000m for Sally Gibbs.
In a mixed gender race, the early pace was set by Russell Lake and Dean Willacy, with Gibbs tucked in behind in third spot. Willacy dropped back at the 2000m mark as Lake continued to dictate the pace until, with just over a lap and a half remaining, Gibbs hit the front and ran strongly to the finish to record a time of 17-15.46 for the record.
Lake and Willacy finished second and third but the race belonged to Gibbs.
Samantha Bitcheno (W12) dipped under 30sec to win her 200m race. The men's 200m was a cracker, won by Alex Colvin (M16) in 24.22sec from Matthew Connolly (M16) 25.30, Aidan Campbell (SM) 25.38 and Max Joret (M19) 25.89.
Christine Sutton (W14) comfortably won her 800m in 2-33.97 from Kelly Furmage (W14) 2-43.82. Aidan Campbell (SM), visiting from Whakatane, won the men's 800m from Michael Sutton (M16) and Nathan Burgi (M19). Sutton stumbled at the bell as he started his challenge but by the time he recovered Campbell was away with a good gap that he held to the finish.
