Four Bay cricket debuts
Four players will make their senior Bay of Plenty cricket debuts next week after a winter-training programme that started in July and a series of trial matches culminated in the naming of the senior men's team yesterday.
Bay of Plenty are out to win the Fergus Hickey
Rosebowl, Northern Districts' top minor association trophy, for the third successive season. The season-long competition is a mixture of one and two-day matches.
Three days of intense one-cricket await Bay of Plenty at the annual ND one-day tournament at Taupo's Owen Delany Park from November 14-16.
The tournament is part of the ND one-day round-robin series, with the Brian Dunning trophy at stake. Bay of Plenty won the Brian Dunning trophy last season before continuing on to annex the Fergus Hickey Rosebowl.
Rotorua's James McMillan has forced his way into the team with some strong performances in the Bay of Plenty warm-up matches.
Two former Tauranga Boys' College first XI players will also make their debuts, with Dane Sorrenson and Tim Clarke progressing through the under-19 and Bay development teams to the province's top side.
Jason Donnelly, a newcomer to the region, has also been selected.
In women's news, two Bay of Plenty players have been named in the Northern Spirit team for two pre-season Twenty20 matches against the Auckland Hearts on November 28.
Bay of Plenty women's captain Emily Wilson and Anna Petersen, who has returned home from Queensland to play for the Bay this summer, are involved in the early season games.
Three Bay players - Jacinta Coleman, Kylie Jens and Sarah Steenson - are in the ND women's development squad.

Top badminton region
Bay of Plenty's Masters 1 team have taken out badminton's regional team of the year at the annual awards night after relieving Auckland of the national title this season for just the second time in history.
Masters 1 - Alistair Gatt, Nick Page, Tony Hall, Matty Champness, Tony Hall, Paula Coupe, Wai Craven, Karen McGee, Leanne Fraser (all Mt Maunganui) and Tauranga's Delwyn Cooper - have also been nominated for team of the year for Badminton NZ's awards.
Badminton Bay of Plenty president Delwyn Cooper won the regional volunteer of the year accolade and is another lining up for the national equivalent, while Heather Archer won the Service to Sport gold award for many years of service with the Tauranga Morning Badminton Club.

Service to Sport awards: Lance Murray and Graham Johnson of the Tauranga Club for service to the club with coaching, fundraising and junior coaching, Peter Archer (Tauranga Morning Club) for service to the Tauranga Morning Club auditing their accounts for many years and Ian Anderson (Utuhina Club) for service to the club and the Rotorua Badminton Hall.
Senior Recognition Awards: Amy Wright (Tauranga), Dylan Henton (Whakatane) and Kelly Stern (Mount) for all being members of the combined Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Thames Valley under-23 team that were runners-up in the nationals.
Club of the Year: Taupo Badminton Club.
Coaches of the Year: Tom Andersen (Utuhina), Amy Wright (Tauranga) and Dave Free (Tauranga).
Junior Player of the Year: Renee Ainsley (Utuhina).
Senior Player of the Year: Karen McGee (Mount)
Junior Players of the Year: Cody Broad (Utuhina) and Regan August (Tauranga).
Going down fighting
Despite a solid double from Daniel Hill, Bay of Plenty's development cricket team were downed on Sunday by Hamilton, the reigning Basil McBurney Shield (Northern Districts second XI) champions.
Batting first, Bay of Plenty posted 170 with Brett Sorrenson topscoring with 73 and getting good support from Hill (47) and Sheldon Kearns (24).
Mitch McCann and Hill took two wickets each but it wasn't enough as Hamilton got up to win by four wickets.
Two Bay of Plenty primary teams opened their Northern District tournament campaigns with victories. This season the primary teams are playing a series of matches and a three-day tournament instead of the week-long tournament previously held in early December.
Bay of Plenty Lakeland, drawn from the Eastern Bay, Rotorua and Taupo, posted a comfortable win against Waikato Valley South defending 167-4.
Bay of Plenty Coastland (Tauranga) also batted first and posted 166 all out against Poverty Bay. They were in some trouble at 52/6, before a good partnership between Connor Probert (43) and Mikaere Teki (18) steadied the ship.
Probert backed up his score with four wickets as Poverty Bay were removed for 128. Jack Preston and Harris Williams also bowled well to take two wickets each.

Mount power to win
Mount Maunganui's singles strenght has carried them to a 5-1 win over Gate Pa in the Bay of Plenty men's premier interclub tennis on Saturday.
Mount's top doubles combination Steve McCashin and Phil Kennedy prevailed in a tight three-setter against Mike Owen and Josh Newman, although Gate Pa levelled through Mike Callard and Tony McMurtrie.
In the top singles Mike Owen pushed Nick Brown hard in the first set before going down in two.
Homewood Katikati got home on a 7 sets to 6 countback against last year's beaten finalists Rotorua-Lymore.
Katikati went 2-0 after a sweep of the doubles but Rotorua No 1 Sean Martin returned to his best with a 6-2 6-2 win over Phil Salmon, with No 2 Peter O'Dea also getting home.
The tie was in the balance when No 4 Kevin Wall lost in straight sets but No 3 Anton Mitchell, despite losing to Alan Russell, grabbed the second that made the difference in the tiebreak.
A full strength Tauranga Lawn had too much firepower for an injury-hit Welcome Bay, winning 6-0, while reigning champions Otumoetai hung on for a closely contested 4-2 win over Papamoa which featured a 14-12 third set tiebreak win to Papamoa's Clayton Knight over Sam Daly in the No 3 singles.

Surfers onto podium
Mt Maunganui surfers have filled the minor placings after the first round of the SOL summer surf series, the O'Neill Sequence surf shop pro, wrapped up in Gisborne at the weekend.
Gisborne's Jay Quinn became the first surfer to secure a crucial spot in the SOL Super 16 that completes the series next April.
Quinn battled through three heats to make it to the final, where he saw off Blair Stewart (Gisborne) and young Mt Maunganui duo Tim O'Connor and Alex Dive, who were unable to keep pace in the decider despite looking sharp all event.
Earlier in the day Stewart and O'Connor eliminated a tiring Tane Wallis (Piha) and 2009 finalist Nick White (Mount in the first semifinal.
Quinn and Dive eliminated Keone Campbell (Taranaki) and Sam Willis (Gisborne) in the second semifinal.
Jessica Santorik (Raglan) claimed the open women's division with one minute remaining in the final, beating off Grace Spiers (Whangamata) and Mt Maunganui's New Zealand representative Laura Rishworth, who struggled to find a decent wave that offered up more than one turn, scoring an 8.33 point heat total in the final and finishing third ahead of Alexis Poulter (Raglan).
The SOL series comes to Mt Maunganui for the Power Balance pro on February 12-13 next year.

Softballers battle
Western Bay of Plenty's best battled to make an impact in the four associations (Counties-Manukau, Waikato, Central Bay and Western Bay premier sorftball Kotahitanga fastpitch competition at the weekend.
In seven games, Waikato teams won all of their games and Western Bay went down in all of theirs.
In the men's competition, Tauranga City Stealers went down to Central Bay's Rotorua Marist 16-13. Highly favoured Western Bay side Ngati Kahu Braves were decisively beaten 6-2 by Waikato's Melville.
In the women's competition, Tauranga City Stealettes went down 6-2 to Marist (Central Bay) and Ngati Kahu Wahine (Western Bay) were overwhelmed by Melville 12-2.
The other Waikato victories in the men's grade were Marlinz beating Manurewa 11-5 and Fairfield United thrashing Drury Pistols (Counties) 10-2. In the women's competition, Marlinz (Waikato) beat Manurewa 8-4.
In the Western Bay premier men's competition Tauranga City Stealers led 5-3 against Rangataua at the top of the fifth before Rangataua edged clear in a tiebreaker 8-6. Otepou's clash with Whalers in the women's championship started evenly, with Otepou leading 3-2 at the top of the second innings before jumping to a 15-4 win.
