The Kiwis couldn't do it on Friday night but at least they provided inspiration for another league team.
Tauranga Whalers coach Paul Pou was still buzzing yesterday, days after his side handed Ngaruawahia their first loss of the Waicoa Bay premier competition with a 16-4 victory.
Pou said his side had a
couple of sketchy training sessions last week but came together as a team to watch the Anzac test on Friday night and it sparked them up on game day.
"Right from the outset our preparation on Saturday morning was great and the intensity that we had during the warm-up was an indicator that I look for in gauging how ready we are as a team," Pou said. "It was great - good communication, good contact, good intensity. The boys looked focused on the commitment to the cause, which is what the team goal is."
Ngaruawahia started with the wind but didn't use it to good effect, while Whalers eased away in the second half, built on a platform of superb defence, led by player of the day Hamish Newlands, who made 40 tackles.
"I knew by halftime that we would win due to the defensive efforts of our first half. The boys played for each other and that was very pleasing to see. Nobody expected us to beat Ngaruawahia, but I know what this team is capable of and we showed that on the weekend."
In other matches, a 10-try blitz by Pikiao helped them to a 56-12 victory over Hamilton Hornets and Ngongotaha snuck a 15-14 win over Taupo Phoenix thanks to a penalty goal by former Rangataua rugby player John Ririnui right on fulltime.
Turangawaewae beat Central 34-28, Taniwharau beat Hukanui 38-10 and Hamilton City Tigers beat Pacific 26-10.
Lee cashes in
Bay of Plenty golfer Danny Lee has moved into the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour after sharing fifth place at the Stadion Classic in Georgia yesterday. Lee backed up his third round 66 with a three-under par 68 in the final round; an eight-under total of 276 good enough for a share of fifth place with three other players at the University of Georgia Golf Club.
Lee's second successive top-10 finish on the Nationwide Tour earns him a US$21,656 ($27,260) pay cheque and takes tour earnings from four events this year to US$43,536, placing him 23rd on the money list. The top 25 at season's end earn a PGA Tour card for next year.
Amateur Russell Henley won the US$550,000 tournament on his home course with a 12-under total of 272, two strokes ahead of American Troy Kelly. Henley, a University of Georgia senior, is just the second amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour.
Tauranga's Josh Geary, the only other New Zealander to make the cut, finished in a tie for 55th at one-over for the tournament.
