Club cricket - Trophy retained:

Mount Maunganui have won back-to-back McNaughton Trophy titles with an 83-run thrashing of Katikati at the Bay Oval on Sunday in a replay of last year's final.

Katikati won the toss and elected to bowl, perhaps encouraged by their poor performance batting first in last season's reserve grade championship decider.

Led by long-time player Blair Parlane's 74, Mount reached a sizeable 232-8 in their allotted 50 overs. with Jason Luke reaching 57. Love Sharma's 4-34 was the best of the Katikati bowling attack.

Katikati's chase for victory was in disarray early after the top order was back in the hutch cheaply, and they found themselves five wickets down with less than 40 runs on the board.

Logan Brewer (36) and Steve Jennings (28) restored some respectability to the innings but the damage had been done and Katikati were rolled for 140, with former Bay rep Steve Charman taking 3-22 to give Mount their second successive Baywide second tier title. Sam Blake and Jonty Rhodes also made their mark with two wickets each.

Meanwhile, overnight rain in Rotorua saw the Attrill Cup game between Eastern Bay of Plenty and Rotorua transferred to an artificial surface on Boord Park.

Eastern Bay were put into bat after losing the toss and were dismissed for a relatively modest 107. Chanse Perham grabbed 3-23.

While Eastern Bay bowlers didn't have a large total to defend it might as well have been as they ripped through Rotorua for just 96. Former Bay rep Dean Butterworth was on fire with four wickets while Steven Ford took 3-30.

Club cricket - B-grade semi:

Semifinalists in both grades have been found after several key match-ups on the last day of round-robin in the Western Bay reserve and B grade club cricket championships on Saturday.

Mount Green, who bon both the first round and Twenty20 competitions, were eliminated from the semis when they failed to beat Cadets, who cemented their top of the table finish by scoring 171 and then bowling Mount out eight runs runs shy of victory.

Tauranga Boys College, who were precariously placed entering the last round, set up a semifinal date with Cadets when they proved too strong for Katikati, scoring 2-5 and then rolling their opponents for just 103.

Greerton Hornets beat Mount Gold to qualify.

Papamoa wrapped up the top spot in the B grade qualifying roundswhen they repelled the challenge of 2010 B grade champions Grasshoppers.

Western Bay club cricket scores:

Athletics - Solid build-up:

Tauranga's Brent Newdick rounded out his competition one week out from the New Zealand Championships with victories in the 400m and long jump on Saturday at the Auckland Centre meet at Mt Smart Stadium.

He won the 400m in 50.48s and long jump clearing 6.79m, as well as taking second in the shot put. The Delhi Commonwealth Games decathlon silver medallist has entered seven events at the national championships this weekend at Waitakere.

Golf - Hamilton third:

If golf's North Island strokeplay championships at Lochiel were 36 instead of 72 holes, Omanu's Craig Hamilton would be heading to this week's national strokeplay event in Hastings a winner.

Hamilton held the halfway lead by two shots on six-under par after rounds of 68 and 70 before former New Zealand rep Daniel Pearce shot the lights out to win by a massive six shots. Pearce shot a nine-under 63 on Saturday to match the course record and then backed it up in the final round with a 68 to comfortably win his first senior title.

Hamilton still finished an eyecatching outright third after weekend rounds of 71 and 73, a shot behind Putaruru's Justin Morris and seven shy of Pearce.

Rotorua's Peter Lee, Pearce's closest rival going into the final round, trailing by one shot, had a final day he'd like to forget with a three over 75 to finish in a share of fourth.

Mt Maunganui's Brad Kendall, a winner the last time the New Zealand strokeplay was held at Bridge Pa two years ago, finished on 285 (71 71 70 73), with Tauranga left-hander Sam Davis (71 71 70 74) a shot behind.

Golf - Smail wins classic:

Bay of Plenty's leading New Zealand-based golf professionals got their hands on the minor money only at the pared-back Brian Perry Classic over the weekend in Hamilton.

Normally a $100,000 54-hole Pro-Am, the tournament was this year scaled back to one round, with Hamilton's David Smail justified his ranking to score a four- under par 68 to see off Mahal Pearce in a three-hole playoff.

Tauranga's Jared Pender was tied third on two-under 70, a shot ahead of Taupo's Jason McIntosh.

Omokoroa's Kieran Muir (77) was 28th equal, with Troy Ropiha's 78 giving him 30th and Omanu-based pro Andrew Gurney 31st after a 79.

Muir, Gurney, James Hamilton and Ben Taylor will all attempt to qualify next weeek for the inaugural New Zealand PGA Pro-Am Championship in Queenstown from March 29-April 1.

Pender gets direct entry into the 122-strong field already confirmed, with the other quartet among 80 golfers having to pre-qualify for 10 available places at either Millbrook or Titirangi next Monday.

Surfing - O'Connor edged:

Mt Maunganui surfer Tim O'Connor's semifinal exit opened the door for Gisborne's Bobby Hansen to take home the lot on the final day of the Rip Curl Pro surfing contest at Raglan's Manu Bay.

Hansen won the open men's division, which included winning the invite to the Padang Cup in Indonesia. In winning the event, Hansen also claimed the overall New Zealand pro series for 2012.

O'Connor had won the most recent event of the New Zealand pro series in Gisborne to leapfrog Hansen for the No 1 national ranking but O'Connor's elimination in the semifinals, finishing third in his heat behind Hansen and Mike Banks, opened the door.

Mt Maunganui's Alex Dive won the under-20 title, ekking out a win in the wave-starved final. It wasn't until the dying stages of the final that Dive scored a low 2.63 point ride that was enough to put him into first place with an 8.3 point heat total.

"So stoked to finally get a win, but is was pretty much flat for the whole 25 minutes and it pretty much came down to one wave," Dive said.

"I pretty much waited for a wave the whole time because I thought a set was going to come through but nothing came and in the end it was that tiny back up wave I got that was enough to push me into the lead."
