Tauranga Girls' College Year 13 student Ayla Carey.

Ayla Carey is eagerly awaiting which chosen trade in the New Zealand Defence Force she can apply for while she carries out her final year at Tauranga Girls' College.

"It could be a role as a medic, in communication and information systems, and, or logistics," the Bay of Plenty Times' Young Achiever of the Week said.

The 17-year-old experienced the three factions of the armed forces, including the Army, Navy and Air force during the Defence Careers Experience careers programmes, before choosing the Air Force.

Miss Carey was accepted into the Defence Careers Experience careers programme in term one and had since passed the application process for the Air Force.

The application process included a fitness test, aptitude test, medical requirements, and interview. She will now have to wait until the intake into one of her chosen trades in medicine or communications becomes available.

"I see my time in the Air Force as being a varied career that will lead me into great opportunities," Miss Carey said.

The talented teen said the week-long programme in Auckland gave her insight into a fulfilling and honourable career with plenty more to strive for.

"This was quite an achievement because it is difficult to get into and this programme and the experience confirmed my interest in a defence force career," she said.

"The officers were able to give detail in each trade, so I was able to find out more about the roles I am interested in."

AYLA CAREY

What has been your biggest achievement this year and why?
My biggest achievement this year was when I was accepted into the DCE [Defence Careers Experience] careers programme during the last week of term one. I was able to experience what each of the three factions of the armed forces - Army, Navy and Air Force - are like. This was quite an achievement because it is difficult to get into and this programme and the experience confirmed my interest in a defence force career. The week in Auckland gave me insight into a fulfilling and honourable career with so much to strive for. The officers were able to give detail in each trade, so I was able to find out more about the roles I am interested in.

What career would you like to pursue after school and why?
I have applied for the Air Force and have passed my application process, which includes a fitness test, aptitude test, medical requirements, and interview. I am currently waiting for the intake into one of my chosen trades to become available. It could be a role as a medic, in communication and information systems, and, or logistics. I see my time in the Air Force as being a varied career that will lead me into great opportunities.

What school subjects do you take?
The subjects I take are history, chemistry, biology, German and statistics.

What is your favourite school subject and why?
My favourite school subject is a toss up between history and German. I like history because I am passionate about learning about past events that were of great significance to New Zealand. I also like learning the language of German and I wish to some day visit the country and pick up the language fluently.

What do you like about Tauranga Girls' College
I like the opportunities offered at Tauranga Girls' College. A typical example was being encouraged to apply for the Defence Careers Experience. There are endless opportunities for students at the school whether it is academically, through the arts, sports or with the wider community.

How do you describe yourself as a student?
I would describe myself as a diligent student as I like to take care in my school work. I am respectful towards my teachers and peers and that provides me with a good classroom environment which motivates me to strive further in my studies.

What hobbies do you like to have outside of school and why?
I like to spend my time out of school doing anything outdoors; like running, kayaking and hiking with my family. I love to read and spend time with my family and friends.
