Power remains out to 59 properties in the Western Bay of Plenty after a crash involving a power pole this morning.

A 17-year-old Katikati woman suffered serious injury when the car she was in crashed into the pole at Waihi Beach about 4.56am. She had been travelling in the passenger seat along Emerton Rd when the crash happened.

A Fire Service northern communications spokesman said firefighters were called to help cut the woman free from the wreckage because she was lightly trapped.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter also responded to the scene and took the woman, who had pelvic and back injuries, and the driver, who had minor head injuries, to Tauranga Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said the woman was in a serious but stable condition.
