Woman hit by train walks away

A woman hit by a train in the Bay of Plenty today has walked away with minimal injuries.

Emergency services are at the scene near State Highway 2 at Otamarakau, where the woman and the train collided.

A reporter at the scene said the incident was in the middle of a holiday camping ground by the beach, near the local marae, but emergency services confirmed the person was not a camper.

The woman could be seen in the back of a police car calm and collected.

Police said the woman suffered minor injuries to her legs and was being transported to hospital.

The woman had been on a small bridge around a bend in the tracks which left her unsighted from the train, police said.

Police were working with Worksafe NZ regarding the incident, police said.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene and could be see leaving.

The reporter said people in the area were laughing and smiling.

A train could be seen stopped in its tracks about 400m from where the collision happened.

The person was understood to still be alive but responding emergency services were yet to arrive at the scene.

Bay of Plenty police shift commander Inspector Tony Edwards said the collision happened about 10.30am and confirmed police had responded.
