A 51-year-old woman was attacked by up to five people while she sat at a Tauranga bus stop early today.
The woman suffered head and facial injuries during the attack which occurred at a bus stop in Welcome Bay on Waitaha Rd, near the intersection of Thornlea Dr, about 1.45am.
Tauranga Police
Detective Alan Kingsbury said it appeared up to five people may have been involved in the attack, which saw the woman taken to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance.
"Some members of the public have called police to report the assault. Police enquiries are continuing to establish exactly what has occurred," he said.
A 38-year-old unemployed woman, who is not believed to be known to the victim, was arrested at her Te Puke home just before 4 this morning in relation to the attack.
She will appear in Tauranga District Court today charged with assault.
Tauranga Police Acting Senior Sergeant Nigel Ramsden said more serious charges were likely to be laid.
No other arrests have been made and police are seeking information from members of the public who may have witnessed the attack.
